The incidence and risk factors of chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) after acute pulmonary embolism (PE) were still controversial. A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to assess the incidence and risk factors of CTEPH after acute PE. ⋯ CTEPH is not a rare complication of acute PE. Close follow-up and implementation of a comprehensive screening program are important, especially in patients with independent risk factors.

Bevacizumab, a recombinant humanized monoclonal antibody against vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), is effective for the treatment of advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, severe adverse events (AEs) have been reported in NSCLC patients treated with bevacizumab. Currently, the contribution of Bevacizumab to thromboembolism is still controversial. We conducted a study to determine the overall risk and incidence of thromboembolism with bevacizumab in NSCLC patients. ⋯ Bevacizumab is associated with a significantly increased risk of thromboembolism development in NSCLC patients. It may have dose-toxicity relationship and low dose of bevacizumab may be a better choice for NSCLC patients, with equal efficacy and low hazard of thromboembolism events.

The study aimed to investigate the correlation between peak expiratory flow (PEF) and postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) for lung cancer patients undergoing lobectomy. ⋯ The presented study revealed a significant correlation between a low PEF value and PPCs in surgical lung cancer patients receiving lobectomy, indicating the potential of a low PEF as an independent risk factor for the occurrence of PPCs and a PPC-guided (PEF value ≤300 L/min) risk assessment could be meaningful for the perioperative management of lung cancer candidates waiting for surgery.

Comparison of non-intubated versus intubated video-assisted thoracoscopic lobectomy for lung cancer.
Non-intubated, or awake, video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery has been implemented for non-anatomical lung resection and the results obtained were encouraging to consider the approach for anatomical pulmonary resection. This study was conducted to evaluate the perioperative outcomes of the non-intubated and intubated video-assisted thoracoscopic lobectomy in lung cancer in regards to feasibility and safety. ⋯ The perioperative surgical outcomes for the non-intubated video-assisted thoracoscopic lobectomy are comparable to the intubated technique. Non-intubated video-assisted thoracoscopic lobectomy is safe and is technically feasible. However, further prospective randomized studies are needed for a better comparison between non-intubated and intubated VATS lobectomy.

Indwelling pleural catheters (IPCs) are increasingly being used for patients with recurrent malignant pleural effusions. They are simple to place and can be done on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. ⋯ With increasing use of IPCs, physicians and patients are faced with complications related to the presence of an indwelling catheter for extended periods of time. The purpose of this review is to describe the various complications of IPCs and to present the available data on how to best treat and potentially prevent these complications.
