The pleiotropic effect of metformin prevents lung injury in animal models. However, metformin has a controversial effect on survival outcomes in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). This study aimed to investigate the effect of metformin therapy before ARDS diagnosis on mortality in ARDS patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). ⋯ This population-based cohort study showed no significant association between prior metformin therapy and 30-day mortality in ARDS patients with DM. Moreover, prior metformin therapy was not associated with increase in overall survival times in ARDS patients with DM.

Several enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols for radical prostatectomy (RP) have been reported in recent years. Nonetheless, there is no sufficient evidence to support the implementation of ERAS as a standard of care modality. ⋯ The data presented so far consistently show that ERAS may be utilized as a standard of care in RP treatment.

Sodium hyaluronate in the treatment of dry eye after cataract surgery: a meta-analysis.
The incidence of dry eye is high after a cataract surgery. However, the clinical efficacy of sodium hyaluronate combined with conventional eye drops for dry eye after cataract surgery remains unclear. The currently available studies were based on small sample sizes, and no systematic review on this topic has been conducted. Thus, a meta-analysis was performed to systematically and accurately evaluate the clinical value of sodium hyaluronate in the treatment of dry eye after cataract surgery. ⋯ For the patients with dry eye after cataract surgery, sodium hyaluronate on the basis of conventional anti-inflammatory treatment is highly effective as it can improve the dry eye symptom score and the results of 3 tests for dry eye. However, high-quality studies are warranted to further investigate the safety of sodium hyaluronate.

Laparoscopic versus open mesh repair for the treatment of recurrent inguinal hernia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
Inguinal hernia repair is a common surgical procedure; however, the effects of laparoscopic and open mesh repair in the treatment of recurrent inguinal hernia are unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of laparoscopic and open mesh repair in the treatment of recurrent inguinal hernia by conducting a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs). ⋯ The laparoscopic approach is superior to the open mesh approach for the repair of recurrent inguinal hernia in some aspects, including the incision infection rate and length of hospital stay. However, more high-quality studies on the effects of laparoscopic and open mesh repair for the treatment of recurrent inguinal hernia are warranted.

It has been recently reported that albumin (ALB) and red cell distribution width (RDW) are correlated with the prognosis of community-acquired pneumonia, while their role in severe communityacquired pneumonia (sCAP) is unknown. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between the ALBRDW score and 90-day mortality of sCAP patients. ⋯ High age, serum creatinine, ALB-RDW score and invasive ventilation were the independent risk factors of 90-day mortality of sCAP patients. In addition, the correlation between ALB-RDW and 90-day mortality was even stronger when combined with CURB-65 score.
