Acute liver failure is an uncommon condition associated with multi organ involvement, high morbidity and mortality. Etiology of acute liver failure varies with age and geographical location. Most cases of acute liver failure in India are due to infectious causes predominantly viral hepatitis. ⋯ Monitoring of clinical and biochemical parameters is done frequently until the patient becomes stable. Mortality is predominantly due to raised intracranial pressure, infections and multi-organ failure. Liver transplant is an important life saving procedure for children with acute liver failure.

Fevers in children are mainly due to infection, malignancy or inflammatory conditions. Rheumatologists have an important role in the care of inflammatory conditions, many of which are associated with fevers. Seven conditions, the hereditary recurrent fever syndromes, have been defined with the presenting symptom of recurring fever, and for which mutation of a single gene has been defined: Chronic infantile neurological articular syndrome (CINCA), Familial cold autoinflammatory syndrome (FACS), Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF), hyperimmunoglobulinemia D (HIDS), Muckle-Wells syndrome (MWS), Pyogenic sterile arthritis and Pyoderma gangrenosum (PAPA) and Tumour necrosis factor receptor-associated periodic syndrome (TRAPS). These conditions will be discussed in detail in regard to how they fit into the wider picture of pediatric rheumatological conditions, how the diagnoses may be established and the current recommended treatments for each condition.

To investigate if morbidity in young children admitted to a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU with a laboratory proven diagnosis of influenza and parainfluenza infection) had increased. ⋯ Pandemic H1N1, influenza and parainfluenza viruses may be associated with significant childhood morbidity and PICU admissions.

Hypoglycemia in a neonate is defined as blood sugar value below 40 mg/dL. It is commonly associated with a variety of neonatal conditions like prematurity, intrauterine growth restriction and maternal diabetes. Screening for hypoglycemia in high-risk situations is recommended. ⋯ However, symptomatic hypoglycemia should always be treated with a continuous infusion of parenteral dextrose. Neonates needing dextrose infusion rates above 12 mg/kg/min should be investigated for a definite cause of hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia has been linked to poor neuro-developmental outcome, and hence aggressive screening and treatment is recommended.

Pediatric hospitalizations associated with 2009 pandemic influenza A (H1N1): an experience from a tertiary care center in north India.
To describe our experience in children hospitalized with the pandemic Influenza A (H1N1) from Northern India. ⋯ The exact incidence of Pandemic 2009 H1N1 influenza on morbidity and mortality is difficult to calculate since only Category "C" patients were screened.
