To examine the effectiveness and cost of implementing a noise reduction protocol in a level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). ⋯ The high efficacy and affordability of noise reduction protocols justify the need for implementation of these measures as a standard of care in neonatal intensive care units.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the etiology, history, physical examination findings, and seasonal variation of acute scrotal problems in children. ⋯ The absence of cremasteric reflex in association with testicular tenderness strongly suggests testicular torsion. The low temperatures during winter may account for the increased incidence of the torsion of both the spermatic cord torsion and the appendages.

The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy and side effect profile of ketoprofen as well as compliance with respect to the taste of the drug and compare these parameters with those of acetaminophen and ibuprofen. ⋯ All three drugs were similar in terms of efficacy, adverse effects, and compliance within 48 hours of therapy. These results suggest that ketoprofen may be used for antipyresis as an alternative to acetaminophen and ibuprofen.

Sedation in neonates undergoing invasive prodedures as central venous catheterization (CVC) remains contro versial. Sevoflurane is an inhaled anesthetic whose periods of action and elimination are very short. The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of sevoflurane for sedation for central venous catheterization (CVC) in non-intubated neonates and preterms. ⋯ The use of sevoflurane in neonates for CVC is feasible and achieve the goals of procedural sedation. The pharmacokinetic of sevoflurane enabled rapid adjustment of the depth of sedation. Sevoflurane appears to be a new agent at the disposal of neonatologists. Its use does not come without risks, especially for smaller preterms, which the treating clinician must anticipate.
