There is a new public health crises threatening the world with the emergence and spread of 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) or the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The virus originated in bats and was transmitted to humans through yet unknown intermediary animals in Wuhan, Hubei province, China in December 2019. There have been around 96,000 reported cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-2019) and 3300 reported deaths to date (05/03/2020). ⋯ Prevention entails home isolation of suspected cases and those with mild illnesses and strict infection control measures at hospitals that include contact and droplet precautions. The virus spreads faster than its two ancestors the SARS-CoV and Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV), but has lower fatality. The global impact of this new epidemic is yet uncertain.

To investigate the difference in pneumococcal carriage, acquisition, antibiotic resistance profiles and serotype distribution, in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) affected and unaffected families. ⋯ While the rate of pneumococcal carriage and acquisition did not differ between CLH and HUC, HIV affected families had exposure to a wider range of serotypes including non-vaccine type serotypes and antibiotic resistant serotypes, than HIV unaffected families.

To evaluate the association between red blood cell (RBC) transfusion leading to necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) within 48 h, known as transfusion-associated necrotizing enterocolitis (TANEC). ⋯ After controlling of confounders, no evidence of association was found between RBC transfusion and TANEC.

To identify prognostic factors and indications in patients receiving continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), and to demonstrate their effect on mortality. ⋯ The CRRT, can be effectively used for removal of fluid overload, treatment of acute attacks of metabolic diseases, and other indications in critically ill pediatric patients. It has a positive effect on mortality in high-risk PICU patients. This treatment modality can be used more frequently in pediatric intensive care unit with improved patient outcomes, and should be focused on starting therapy in early stages of fluid overload.

The objectives of this study were to study the clinical and biochemical profile of neonates with sepsis and to evaluate the diagnostic role of presepsin and its comparison with C-reactive protein (CRP) and Procalcitonin (PCT). This study was conducted from March 2015 through October 2016 in Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at S N Medical College, Agra. Neonates with ≥1 clinical features of sepsis and/or two risk factors were included. ⋯ At chosen cut-off values, sensitivity of CRP, PCT and presepsin was 80.5%, 80.5%, 97.6% and specificity was 97.5%, 80.5%, 95.1% respectively. PCT and CRP were comparable as diagnostic markers of neonatal sepsis. Presepsin, in comparison with CRP and PCT has better sensitivity and negative predictive value (NPV).
