To evaluate the value of soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) in diagnosing sepsis and predicting mortality in critically ill children. ⋯ suPAR has both a diagnostic and a prognostic value for critically ill children. However, it does not seem to be superior to the classic laboratory markers and clinical scoring systems.

Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome: A Rare Complication in Pediatric Diabetic Ketoacidosis.
Cerebral edema (CE) and non cardiogenic pulmonary edema (acute respiratory distress syndrome, ARDS) are life-threatening complications of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). In contrast to CE complicating DKA, which is primarily reported in pediatric patients, ARDS is rarely described in this age group. ⋯ It is feasible that severe acidosis, hypotension, azotemia, hypoalbuminemia and the superimposed aggressive intravenous fluid administration were important risk factors for the development of cerebral edema and ARDS in the index patient. The report highlights the importance of early diagnosis and aggressive therapy in the management of ARDS, and summarizes the published literature on this rarely reported complication of pediatric DKA.

MRI Customized Play Therapy in Children Reduces the Need for Sedation--A Randomized Controlled Trial.
To evaluate the effectiveness of an MRI-specific play therapy intervention on the need for sedation in young children. ⋯ The use of an MRI customized play therapy with pediatric patients undergoing diagnostic MRI resulted in significant reduction of the use of sedation.

To determine the vitamin D status and the association between vitamin D status and the clinical outcome of critically ill children admitted to pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) in South India. ⋯ Vitamin D deficiency is common among pediatric patients admitted to PICU in South India. Low serum 25(OH) D level was associated with higher severity of illness, need for mechanical ventilation, more vasopressor use and lower serum calcium levels. No association between vitamin D status and mortality was demonstrated.

Efficacy of Single Dose Oral Paracetamol in Reducing Pain During Examination for Retinopathy of Prematurity: A Blinded Randomized Controlled Trial.
To investigate the efficacy of paracetamol in reducing pain during examination for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in preterm infants. ⋯ Oral paracetamol modestly reduces pain scores during eye examinations. Further cross-over trials on dose and frequency of paracetamol and combination of pharmacological with non-pharmacological approaches and paracetamol alone as a single agent in significant pain reduction are needed.
