One of the critical sites of the thermal injuries is the region of the perineum. Burns of the perineum are relatively frequent, while affections of the anus and sphincters are rare. ⋯ The site of the burns proved in both instances decisive for treatment and for subsequent prognosis. The surgical procedures (necrectomy and autotransplantation) had to be prepared with regard to the case-histories: in the 11-year-old boy by colostomy and in the adult man suffering from muscular dystrophy by a synthetic low-residue diet.

Treatment by continuous renal replacement therapy in patients with burn injuries.
Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) is a relatively new therapeutic procedure which helps in the treatment of critically ill patients with renal failure as well as those without renal failure. CRRT effectively removes urea and creatinine and maintains a balanced milieu interleur and water balance. ⋯ Most frequently venovenous haemofiltration and venovenous haemodiafiltration are used. The authors present their experience with the CRRT treatment of 40 patients in the Burn Centre Ostrava and with the results attained.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical TrialEffects of a silicone-coated polyamide net dressing and calcium alginate on the healing of split skin graft donor sites: a prospective randomised trial.
An open randomised prospectively controlled trial was performed to assess the healing efficacy, slippage rate and degree of discomfort on removal of calcium alginate and a silicone-coated polyamide net dressing on split skin graft donor sites. Sixteen patients were randomised to the calcium alginate group and 14 to the silicone-coated group. The donor sites were assessed at days 7, 10, 14 and up to day 21. ⋯ Overlaid absorbent gauze adhered to the donor site through the fenestrations in the dressing necessitating the placement of paraffin gauze between the experimental dressing and the overlying cotton gauze. There was one infection in the study, occurring in the alginate group. Based on these results we recommend calcium alginate as the dressing of choice for split skin graft donor sites.

A simple, cost effective, innovative method of securing burns dressing.
An easy, simple way of securing the burns dressing has been described. This is achieved by using an ordinary office stapler and staple pins. The use of long, encircling gauze bandages for fixation of burns wound dressings around the torso and extremities, is eliminated. This article describes the use of this innovative, cost effective, quick, easy and simple method of fixation of burns wound dressings.

Comparative StudyMultivariate comparison of craniofacial morphology in different types of facial clefts.
Based on X-ray measurements of the head of 187 adult men with cleft lip and/or palate, the authors compared, using the multivariate method, deviations in the craniofacial morphology between different types of clefts in the following seven groups: cleft lip alone, complete and incomplete isolated cleft palate, cleft of the soft palate only, unilateral complete and incomplete and bilateral complete cleft lip and palate. The X-ray films were evaluated according to Jarabak's method. A special position is held by cleft lip alone with minimal skeletal and dental effects. ⋯ The variable which differentiates most types of clefts in the skeletal analysis is the depth of the maxilla; in the dental analysis it is the interincisal angle, which is, however, influenced by treatment. Jarabak's analysis can record the basic deviations of the configuration of the bony face with a cleft but does not detect some important characteristics such as the vertical proportionality of the face and the posteroposition of the maxilla. The assessment of the soft profile is, however, inadequate and unsuitable.
