Acute burn resuscitation and fluid creep: it is time for colloid rehabilitation.
Fluid overloading has become a global phenomenon in acute burn care. The consensus Parkland formula that has excluded colloid use, the impact of goal-directed resuscitation, and the overzealous on the scene crystalloid resuscitation combined with subsequent inefficient titration of fluid administration and lack of timely reduction of infusion rates, have all contributed to this phenomenon of fluid overloading, known as fluid creep and recognized only recently, constituting a landmine in modern burn care. Solid evidence is supportive to the fact that excessive administration of crystalloid and the abandonment of colloid replenishment at some point of resuscitation are the major contributors to fluid creep. With available evidence from the literature, the present is a comprehensive review of literature about fluid creep, trying to determine the etiology behind it as well as to propose strategies to control its magnitude and complications, namely through colloid administration amongst other options.

The treatment and hospitalization policies in various hospitals in Israel are influenced by injury severity and by the existence or non-existence of a designated burn treatment body. Severely injured burn victims requiring designated burn treatment are referred to one of Israel's five major burn units located in the highest level trauma centres that have an advanced burn treatment infrastructure. ⋯ Implementation of a national burn repository such as that in the USA will be able to give burn treatment specialists in our country a basis for comparison of treatment standards and allow for better care for burn victims. The Israeli Burn Association has a major role in the processes discussed in the manuscript.

Epidemiology of ventilator-associated tracheobronchitis and vantilator-associated pneumonia in patients with inhalation injury at the Burn Centre in Brno (Czech Republic).
Aim. The aim of this work is to determine the incidence of ventilator-associated tracheobronchitis (VAT) and ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) and to define the define the most important respiratory pathogens in patients with inhalation injury. Introduction. ⋯ In this study we were able to determine the incidence of VAP and VAT in patients with inhalation injury. In spite of the advances in diagnostics and therapy, inhalation injury is still burdened with disappointingly high morbidity and mortality rates. For this reason, the treatment of VAP remains a major challenge for all physicians caring for patients with inhalation injury.

Introduction. The key element of a safe workplace for employees is the maintenance of fire safety. Thermal, chemical, and electrical burns are common types of burns at the workplace. ⋯ Conclusion. Burn injuries at the workplace predominantly occur among young male workers, and the study has shown that chemical burns are relatively frequent. This study functions as the basis for the evaluation of work-related burns and identification of the causes of these injuries to formulate adequate safety measures, especially for young, male employees working with chemicals.

Epidemiology of severe burn injuries in a Tertiary Burn Centre in Tehran, Iran.
The aim of the study was to examine the epidemiological characteristics of hospitalized burn patients in a tertiary burn centre in Tehran, Iran. A hospital-based cross-sectional study of all hospitalized patients with burn injuries was conducted in Motahari Burn and Reconstruction Center in Tehran from August to December 2010. Medical records of all hospitalized burn patients were reviewed and pertinent information was captured. ⋯ Binary logistic regression analysis showed that sex (female) and total body surface area (TBSA) burned were the strongest predictors of survival in this cohort. Our findings showed that burn injury continued to be a significant public health problem in Iran, young people (26-35 yr) being the most affected. TBSA and sex (female) were found to be the most predictive factors of patient survival.
