Sport-related concussion is a common problem encountered by pediatricians and other primary care physicians in their practice. Assessment of concussion is essentially based on clinical evaluation. The Zurich consensus statement provides a basic framework to guide concussion management decisions and recommends an individualized approach to exercising clinical judgment in return-to-play decisions. This article reviews practice aspects of concussion for the adolescent athletes who present in a primary care office or clinic setting.

This article reviews some common conditions in adolescents that require critical care. Topics that are covered include severe sepsis and shock, acute respiratory distress syndrome, status asthmaticus, diabetic ketoacidosis, poisoning (acetaminophen, decongestants, prescription medications, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors), and trauma. Comments about bariatric surgery are also included.

ReviewUpdate on cardiovascular screening: can we prevent sudden cardiac death in adolescent athletes?
Cardiovascular screening of athletes to prevent sudden death has been a subject of ongoing debate. In the United States, such screening is currently based on history and physical examination. ⋯ The 2010 European Society of Cardiology guidelines and recent US studies suggest the usefulness of ECG in screening athletes. This article provides an overview of key aspects of cardiovascular screening currently recommended in the United States and the recommendations for the use of ECG.
