Comparative StudyFecal lactoferrin as a marker for disease activity in inflammatory bowel disease: comparison with other neutrophil-derived proteins.
1) To investigate which neutrophil-derived proteins in feces most accurately reflect disease activity in inflammatory bowel disease. 2) To examine the extracellular release of these proteins by activated neutrophils and their stability in feces by in vitro study. ⋯ Both our clinical and our in vitro studies suggested that Lf is the most suitable of these proteins to use as neutrophil-derived fecal marker of inflammation for clinical application.

Electrically evoked cerebral potentials during esophageal distension at perception and pain threshold.
To investigate esophageal sensory function in normal volunteers. ⋯ The study suggests that repetitive electrical stimulation of the human esophagus is predominantly mediated via vagal A-delta fibers. The unaltered EPs at the perception and pain thresholds suggest that vagal A-delta fibers are not involved in mediation of pain. The findings support the view that painful and nonpainful stimuli are mediated via different visceral afferents between the esophagus and brain in humans.

Pericardial effusion and left ventricular function in acute pancreatitis.
To establish the prevalence of pericardial effusion and to evaluate left ventricular function in patients with acute pancreatitis. ⋯ The presence of pericardial effusion or left ventricular asynergy may be observed occasionally at echocardiography in acute pancreatitis patients; these findings, in contrast to the presence of pleural and abdominal effusions, seem to be unrelated to the severity of the disease.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical TrialOmeprazole coupled with two antibiotics for Helicobacter pylori eradication and prevention of ulcer recurrence.
Numerous therapeutic trials aimed at eradicating Helicobacter pylori (HP) from the gastric mucosa and preventing ulcer recurrence have been carried out; however, an optimal treatment has not yet been established with carefully controlled randomized studies. ⋯ The combined therapy with amoxycillin, metronidazole, and omeprazole is highly effective in both HP eradication and prevention of duodenal ulcer recurrence.

Comparative StudyWallstents versus plastic stents in malignant biliary obstruction: effects of stent patency of the first and second stent on patient compliance and survival.
In prospective trials in patients with malignant biliary obstruction, it has been reported that Wallstents prolong stent patency, but this does not translate into a significant survival benefit. Compared with prospective trials, however, survival may be different in clinical practice because of differences in patient compliance. We report on a retrospective, long term analysis comparing Wallstents versus plastic stents. ⋯ Initial placement of a Wallstent results in an increase of stent patency of the first and second stent. Duration of stent patency appears to have a determinant effect on patient compliance. Increased stent patency and patient compliance seem to improve survival in clinical practice.
