Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical TrialUtility of Web-based assessment of patient satisfaction with endoscopy.
The dramatic growth of the World Wide Web (Web) holds potential for use in survey distribution and submission. Its use has not previously been studied in the context of patient satisfaction with endoscopy procedures. In this study we compared standard mail, telephone, and Web-based modes of endoscopy satisfaction survey administration with respect to response rate and response content. ⋯ The potential of our Web-based survey was limited by poor response rates. This arose from privacy protection precautions that complicated access to the Web site. Future Web-based strategies for surveying patients will need to be more user-friendly while maintaining the intent of the recent Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act regulations.

Comparative Study Clinical Trial Controlled Clinical TrialTransarterial chemoembolization for inoperable, early stage hepatocellular carcinoma in patients with Child-Pugh grade A and B: results of a comparative study in 96 Chinese patients.
The efficacy of transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) in prolongation of survival is controversial. We conducted a comparative study to determine whether TACE treatment had any survival benefit for patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and with relatively preserved liver function. ⋯ TACE treatment improved survival in patients with unresectable HCC in the early stages and with relatively preserved liver function.

Comparative StudyBone density in a population-based cohort of premenopausal adult women with early onset inflammatory bowel disease.
We aimed to determine the bone mineral density (BMD) using dual energy x-ray absorptiometry in a population-based sample of women with inflammatory bowel disease who were diagnosed before age 20 yr and who are currently premenopausal and less than 45 yr. ⋯ In a population-based sample of women diagnosed with IBD before 20 yr of age and who are currently premenopausal, their average BMD is normal and the prevalence of osteoporosis is very low. Despite the potential for children with IBD to develop osteoporosis, their BMD as adults is generally normal.
