Prevention of atrial fibrillation with moderate doses of amiodarone in the postoperative period of cardiac surgery is safe and effective in patients with high risk for developing this arrhythmia.
To assess if prophylaxis with moderate doses of amiodarone in the postoperative period of cardiac surgery (coronary artery bypass grafting and/or valve surgery), reduces the incidence of atrial fibrillation in patients with high risk for developing this arrhythmia. ⋯ The prophylactic use of amiodarone was effective in the prevention of atrial fibrillation in patients with three or more risk factors for this arrhythmia. This treatment can be useful to reduce stay at the Intensive Care Unit and, consequently, the complications originating from longer hospitalization.

Case ReportsExtrinsic compression of left main coronary artery from aneurysmal dilation of pulmonary trunk in a adolescent: involution after surgery occlusion of sinus venosus atrial septal defect and pulmonary trunk plasty for reduction.
We report the case of an adolescent referred with initial diagnosis of pulmonary hypertension. Non-invasive investigation disclosed a sinus venous atrial septal defect with pulmonary hypertension. ⋯ Surgical closure of the defect in addition to pulmonary trunk plasty were undertaken. Two years after the surgery the patient is well, with clinical signs of mild pulmonary hypertension, and showing no evidence--also on echocardiogram--of left coronary artery trunk obstruction.

Comparative StudyVegetarian diet and cholesterol and triglycerides levels.
Compare levels of triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low density lipoprotein (LDL) and high density lipoprotein (HDL) among vegetarians and omnivores. ⋯ Vegetarian diet was associated to lower levels of TG, TC and LDL as compared to the diet of omnivores.

Non-invasive estimate of cardiac output during exercise based on impedance cardiography and oxygen uptake in the elderly.
This study assessed the agreement between cardiac output (Q) measurements generated by two indirect methods and their applicability in 54 men and 77 women (aged 60-90). ⋯ These results suggest that there is a good agreement between the two methods for the measurement of Q during exercise in the elderly, which is compatible with the findings of similar studies with young subjects.
