Comparative Study
Food and headache attacks. A comparison of patients with migraine and tension-type headache.
The role of foods as headache precipitants is still matter of debate. Several studies reported that dietary constituents may precipitate migraine attacks. Some authors reported that also tension type headache attacks may be provoked by foods. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of foods as headache triggers in both groups of patients. ⋯ Our study suggests that foods may trigger not only migraine but also tension type headache attacks.

The effect of preemptive intravenous morphine on postoperative analgesia and surgical stress response.
Although initial studies of preemptive analgesia showed that preoperative blockade with local anaesthetics or preoperative administration of systemic opioids was more effective in reducing postoperative pain than control conditions involving no treatment, the result of subsequent investigations comparing the effects of preoperative treatment with the same treatment initiated after surgery have produced inconsistent RESULTS. The reasons for the lack of consistency are not clear. Studies about the relationship of preemptive analgesia and both analgesic consumption and surgical stress response are limited. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of preemptive intravenous morphine on both postoperative analgesic consumption and surgical stress response. ⋯ Preemptive morphine 0.15 mg/kg intravenous has decreased total morphine consumption but has failed to suppress the surgical stress response.

Upper extremities deep venous thrombosis: comparison of light reflection rheography and colour duplex ultrasonography for diagnosis and follow-up.
Non-invasive diagnosis of axillary-subclavian vein thrombosis or documentation of the post-thrombotic syndrome performing methods currently in use is not definitive. The purpose of this prospective study was to compare two methods for the diagnosis and follow-up of patients with primary and secondary axillary-subclavian vein thrombosis: light reflection rheography (LLR) which is a reflection of venous pressure changes in the extremity as record from the subdermal capillary plexus, and colour duplex ultrasonography (CDUS). ⋯ The tracing obtained by LLR is easy to interpret and provides objective evidence of proximal venous occlusion. The test is easy to apply and the instrumentation is relatively inexpensive. Both LLR and CDUS, could prove to be an exciting development among non invasive diagnostic techniques for axillary-subclavian vein thrombosis, with major sensitivity of LLR in the follow-up.

Critical care medicine has developed in the last few years into a separate scientific discipline and studies related to the outcome after intensive care usually suggest a long hospital stay that becomes cost prohibitive. The majority of problems (death) amongst critically ill patients requiring critical care involve sepsis, inflammation, tissue damage-oxidative stress, oxygen tension PO2, lipid peroxidation. The present investigation involves monitoring of serum levels of MDA, SOD as a possible guideline for severity of clinical situations in critically ill patients. ⋯ The results of the present study have amply revealed the utility and relevance of monitoring oxidative stress in critically ill patients as biochemical markers, cost-effectiveness and role in decision making (withdrawal/continuation of different support modalities) as deemed fit.

The aim of this study is to test the efficacy of gemcitabine as single agent therapy in advanced non-small cell lung cancer in the elderly by the evaluation of the clinical response, the survival increase and the quality of life. ⋯ The effectiveness of gemcitabine as single agent therapy as not yet been tested due to the scanty number of patients, nevertheless it must be considered in relation to the improvement of the patient s quality of life.
