Meta Analysis
Efficacy of statin therapy in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis from 2008-2019.
Statins produce significant hypolipidemic effects and reduce C-reactive protein (CRP) in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It has been reported that statins did not prevent the acute exacerbation of COPD or improve clinical outcomes. Therefore, we analyzed the actual therapeutic effects of statins on COPD therapy during long-term clinical trials. ⋯ Clinical trials conducted over a 10-year period revealed beneficial advantages of statin therapy in COPD patients, permitting increased exercise capacity, FEV1/FVC and HDL. In addition, CRP, IL-6, systolic blood pressure, SGRQ scores and CAT were significantly decreased as well as lipid levels.

Effect of metformin use on the risk and prognosis of ovarian cancer: an updated systematic review and meta-analysis.
Emerging evidence suggests that metformin has a potential antitumor effect both in vitro and in vivo. Increasing epidemiological studies indicate that diabetic patients receiving metformin therapy have lower incidences of cancer and have better survival rates. However, there are limited and inconsistent studies available about the effect of metformin therapy on ovarian cancer (OC). Thus, we conducted this meta-analysis to study the effect of metformin therapy on OC. Meanwhile, we systematically reviewed relevant studies to provide a framework for future research. ⋯ The use of metformin can potentially reduce the risk of OC among diabetics, and it also can significantly improve PFS and OS in patients with OC. A further large clinical investigation would be needed to adopt our finding in practice, however, our systematic review provides an insight for future study designs.

The aim of this study was to study the effect of protein kinase TBK1 and IKKε inhibitor Amlexanox on cardiac function after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in rats. ⋯ The protein kinases TBK1 and IKKε inhibitor Amlexanox can improve cardiac function in rats after AMI, reduce myocardial inflammatory response, reduce myocardial apoptosis, and then exert myocardial protection in vivo.

Within the presented prospective study, we aimed to illuminate the effect of long-term physical exercise on serum levels of adipsin (complement factor D) and angiopoietin-like 4 (ANGPTL4). Although past studies already outlined the effects of acute exercise, our trial design aimed to depict the development under long-term physical activity conditions. ⋯ Serum levels of adipsin and ANGPTL4 were closely tied to the individual performance gain of the participating probands. An association of adipsin levels, initial performance, and serum triglycerides was found at baseline. Interestingly, this interrelationship was not detectable after eight months of physical training. This finding might indicate adipsin's involvement in linking triglyceride-balance to individual performance and energy demands in a homeostatic state.

Observational Study
Early treatment with low-molecular-weight heparin reduces mortality rate in SARS-CoV-2 patients.
Since the beginning of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, millions of people have been infected and died. Different therapeutic approaches have been recommended, but only a few have shown clinical advantages. Low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) has been recommended to prevent COVID-19-related thrombo-embolic events. We aimed to evaluate the impact of early treatment with LMWH on hospital admission and death in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection. ⋯ Early treatment with LMWH was associated with lower mortality in our cohort. Further studies are needed to better assess the role of wider LMWH administration in terms of timing and regimen dose.
