To test the ability of isoflurane-induced preconditioning against oxygen and glucose deprivation (OGD) injury in vitro. ⋯ Isoflurane is capable of inducing preconditioning in hippocampal slices in vitro in a dose-dependent manner, and dual exposure to isoflurane with a lower concentration is more effective in triggering preconditioning than a single exposure. Isoflurane-induced neuroprotection might be involved with ERK1/2 activities.

Effects of acute normovolemic hemodilution on perioperative coagulation and fibrinolysis in elderly patients undergoing hepatic carcinectomy.
To observe the effects of acute normovolemic hemodilution (ANH) on coagulation function and fibrinolysis in elderly patients undergoing hepatic carcinectomy. ⋯ In elderly patients undergoing resection of liver cancer, ANH may not hamper fibrinolysis and coagulation function. It could therefore be safe to largely reduce allogeneic blood transfusion.

To investigate the association between preoperative, operative, and postoperative factors and persistent pleural effusion after the extracardiac Fontan procedure. ⋯ For reduing postoperative duration and volume of pleural drainage following Fontan procedure, it seems to be important to improve the preoperative oxygen saturation, use large size of conduit, shorten cardiopulmonary bypass time, and make fenestration during the operation, as well as avoid postoperative infections.
