Clinical TrialRadial extracorporeal shock wave therapy in the treatment of shoulder calcific tendinitis.
Shoulder calcific lesions of the rotator cuff are a common problem in physiatric and orthopedic practice. The lesions are mostly located in the supraspinatus tendon, close to the insertion area in the critical zone. Patients are usually treated conservatively by nonsteroid antiinflammatory drugs, analgesic drugs, local injections, physiotherapy and rarely by applying surgical procedures. ⋯ The level of statistical significance was determined with student t-test. Radial ESWT applied to patients with shoulder calcific lesions of the rotator cuff resulted in pain relief increase in the range of motion and increase in the muscular strength. As shown by X-ray, these results were followed by the decrease in the size of the rotator cuff calcifications.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialEfficacy of antimicrobial triclosan-coated polyglactin 910 (Vicryl* Plus) suture for closure of the abdominal wall after colorectal surgery.
This study compared Triclosan coated polyglactin 910 (Vicryl* Plus) with polyglactin 910 (Vicryl*) on abdominal wall healing in colorectal surgery patients. 184 patients with colorectal cancer were included in the study. In 91, the abdominal wall was closed with the Vicryl* Plus, and in 93 patients with Vicryl*. Demographic characteristics, biochemical inflammatory parameters, wound appearance, length of hospital stay, postoperative wound complications and post-incisional hernia were recorded. ⋯ One dehiscence was noticed. In the Vicryl* group 12 patients had an SSI, 14 patients had inflammatory reactions to the skin sutures and 7 patients had a wound dehiscence. Closure of the abdominal wall using Vicryl* Plus decreases postoperative wound complications, length of hospital stay and is associated with a more rapid return of inflammatory markers to normal.

Comparative StudyThe validity of ESIN method of osteosynthesis compared to other active surgical methods of treatment of diaphyseal fractures of long bones in children and adolescents.
We investigated the relationship of efficiency in the application of the ESIN method of intramedullary osteosynthesis and other active surgical methods in the treatment of diaphyseal fractures of long bones in children and adolescents. The study comprised 100 subjects treated by elastic stable intramedullary osteosynthesis (ESIN - group A) and 50 subjects in whom other active surgical methods were applied (group B). The following criteria of efficiency of treatment were applied: 1. length of perioperative hospitalization, 2. time elapsed since the operation until the beginning of loading of the traumatized extremity, 3. time elapsed since the operation until the full loading of the extremity, i.e. until the recovery of the fracture, 4. incidence of complications, 5. number of post-operative outpatient clinical visits until the recovery of the fracture and 6. overall number of X-ray images of the fractured bone since the accident until the coalescence of the fracture. ⋯ In postoperative period there were fewer outpatient controls in patients to whom ESIN method of osteosynthesis was applied, and the difference is statistically significant (Z = 7.69, p < 0.001). 6. Likewise, the overall number of X-ray controls was lesser (Z = 8.06, p < 0.001). The results of examining the above parameters point to a greater efficiency of treating diaphyseal fractures of long bones in children and adolescents by the ESIN method of osteosynthesis, compared to other active surgical methods.

Thoracic paravertebral block was widely practised at the beginning of the 20th century. It has enjoyed a renaissance in the past decade. ⋯ Compared to the other available regional techniques such as epidural, intercostal and interpleural, paravertebral blocks offer comparable or better analgesia with less side effects. Thoracic paravertebral blocks deserve greater consideration and investigation.

The aim of this study was to determine whether elite international junior rowers in 2007 were heavier and taller than those evaluated in 1997, and to compare this change among finalists and non-finalists, and sweep rowers and scullers. Body weight and height data obtained by a questionnaire from a total of 398 rowers (42% female, 58% male) at the Junior World Rowing Championships in Beijing, People's Republic of China, in 2007 (65.9% of all competitors), were compared with data from 603 rowers measured at the Junior World Rowing Championships in Hazewinkel, Belgium in 1997 (36.5% female, 63.5% male, representing 90% and 89% of all competitors, respectively, by gender). Male and female rowers in 2007 were significantly taller compared to those in 1997 (1.0 cm, p = 0.009 and 2.1 cm, p < 0.001, respectively; one-sample t-test). ⋯ The finalists and sweep rowers were taller and heavier compared to nonfinalists and scullers at both Championships respectively. The heights of elite level junior rowers increased significantly over the decade. The finalists at World Junior Rowing Championships were again taller and heavier compared to the nonfinalists.
