A fast track program was implemented using best practices to prevent postoperative ileus. Patients receiving traditional care for bowel surgery were compared to patients on the fast track program. The incidence of ileus decreased 43%, and length of stay decreased 1.352 days.

Bedside nurse-to-nurse handoff promotes patient safety.
Nurse-to-nurse beside handoff allows the oncoming nurse to visualize the patient and ask questions of the previous nurse. It encourages pateints to be involved actively in their care and allows standardized communication between nursing shifts. ⋯ Use of bedside nursing handoff promotes staff accountability, two-person IV medication reconciliation, and patient satisfaction.

Maintaining placement of temporary enteral feeding tubes requires ongoing bedside nursing assessment. Tube placement verification is essential to detect and minimize adverse effects. A critical appraisal of current evidence and best practice recommendations regarding temporary feeding tubes is provided.

Given the ample evidence delirium in hospitalized older adults is underdiagnosed and not recognized by nurses up to 85% of the time, interventions are needed at the point of care to assist nurses in recognizing delirium. In this qualitative study, factors that might influence the implementation of a point-of-care screening tool for delirium were examined.

Medical-surgical nurses care for a complex patient mix. The Synergy Model framed the development of tools to assess nursing competency and patient acuity which yield data for daily staffing assignments. Data support positive outcomes as a result of this model.
