Patients' pain experiences with peripheral i.v. insertions, with and without the use of lidocaine for anesthesia, were described and compared. Patients reported their preferences related to the use of intradermal lidocaine with future i.v. insertions.

Older adults experiencing acute pain are often underassessed and undertreated. This review summarizes recommendations from an evidence-based practice guideline on acute pain management in older adults. Key areas highlighted are pain assessment and monitoring, patient education, pharmacologic management, and nonpharmacologic management.

Smoking cessation is an important component to improving patients' health and quality of life. This case study demonstrates how nurses can implement a successful smoking cessation program in outpatient settings. By applying this knowledge, adult-health nurses can increase the probability that hospitalized patients will be successful in stopping smoking.
