Vancomycin-bearing synthetic bone graft delivers rhBMP-2 and promotes healing of critical rat femoral segmental defects.
Bone grafts simultaneously delivering therapeutic proteins and antibiotics may be valuable in orthopaedic trauma care. Previously, we developed a poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)-nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite (pHEMA-nHA) synthetic bone graft that, when preabsorbed with 400-ng rhBMP-2/7, facilitated the functional repair of critical-size rat femoral defects. Recently, we showed that pHEMA-nHA effectively retains/releases vancomycin and rhBMP-2 in vitro. The success of such a strategy requires that the incorporation of vancomycin does not compromise the structural integrity of the graft nor its ability to promote bone healing. ⋯ pHEMA-nHA-vancomycin preabsorbed with rhBMP-2 may be useful in the repair of critical-size long bone defects prone to infections.

Comparative StudyThe National Hospital Discharge Survey and Nationwide Inpatient Sample: the databases used affect results in THA research.
The National Hospital Discharge Survey (NHDS) and the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) collect sample data and publish annual estimates of inpatient care in the United States, and both are commonly used in orthopaedic research. However, there are important differences between the databases, and because of these differences, asking these two databases the same question may result in different answers. The degree to which this is true for arthroplasty-related research has, to our knowledge, not been characterized. ⋯ Level II, prognostic study. Comparative StudyAre quadrilateral surface buttress plates comparable to traditional forms of transverse acetabular fracture fixation?
Several construct options exist for transverse acetabular fracture fixation. Accepted techniques use a combination of column plates and lag screws. Quadrilateral surface buttress plates have been introduced as potential fixation options, but as a result of their novelty, biomechanical data regarding their stabilizing effects are nonexistent. Therefore, we aimed to determine if this fixation method confers similar stability to traditional forms of fixation. ⋯ Quadrilateral surface buttress plates may present a viable alternative for the treatment of transtectal transverse acetabular fractures. Clinical studies are required to fully define the use of this new form of fixation for such fractures when accessed through the anterior intrapelvic approach.

Comparative StudyThe epidemiology and injury patterns of acetabular fractures: are the USA and China comparable?
Acetabular fractures are rare injuries in heterogeneous patient groups, making it difficult to develop adequately powered prospective single-center clinical trials in the USA or Europe. Chinese trauma centers treat a high volume of these injuries, and if the patient population and injury patterns are comparable to those in the USA, this might support development of multicenter studies in Level I trauma centers in the two countries. ⋯ Level III, therapeutic study.
