Is the Preoperative Use of Antidepressants and Benzodiazepines Associated with Opioid and Other Analgesic Use after Hip and Knee Arthroplasty?
Mental health disorders can occur in patients with pain conditions, and there have been reports of an increased risk of persistent pain after THA and TKA among patients who have psychological distress. Persistent pain may result in the prolonged consumption of opioids and other analgesics, which may expose patients to adverse drug events and narcotic habituation or addiction. However, the degree to which preoperative use of antidepressants or benzodiazepines is associated with prolonged analgesic use after surgery is not well quantified. ⋯ Level III, therapeutic study.

Meta AnalysisLow Reinfection Rates But a High Rate of Complications in THA for Infection Sequelae in Childhood: A Systematic Review.
Childhood hip infections can result in serious sequelae during adulthood, including persistent pain, functional limitations, and premature THA. When THA is performed in patients who had hip joint infections during childhood, surgeons surmise these arthroplasties are at an increased risk of complications and incomplete recovery. Randomized Controlled TrialDo Relaxation Exercises Decrease Pain After Arthroscopic Rotator Cuff Repair? A Randomized Controlled Trial.
Pain after rotator cuff repair is commonly managed with opioid medications; however, these medications are associated with serious adverse effects. Relaxation exercises represent a potential nonpharmacologic method of pain management that can be easily implemented without substantial adverse effects; however, the effects of relaxation exercises have not been studied in a practical, reproducible protocol after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. ⋯ Level II, therapeutic study.

Delivering uninterrupted cancer treatment to patients with musculoskeletal tumors has been essential during the rapidly evolving coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, as delays in management can be detrimental. Currently, the risk of contracting COVID-19 in hospitals when admitted for surgery and the susceptibility due to adjuvant therapies and associated mortality due to COVID-19 is unknown, but knowledge of these potential risks would help treating clinicians provide appropriate cancer care. ⋯ Level III, therapeutic study.

What Are the Early Outcomes of True Reverse Periacetabular Osteotomy for Symptomatic Hip Overcoverage?
Acetabular overcoverage is associated with pincer-type femoroacetabular impingement (FAI). A subtype of acetabular overcoverage is caused by a deep acetabulum with a negatively tilted acetabular roof, in which acetabular reorientation may be a preferable alternative to rim trimming to uncover the femoral head. We introduced the true reverse periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) in 2003, which in contrast to an anteverting PAO, also flexes and abducts the acetabulum relative to the intact ilium to decrease anterior and lateral femoral head coverage and correct negative tilt of the acetabular roof. To our knowledge, the clinical results of the true reverse PAO have not been evaluated. ⋯ Level IV, therapeutic study.
