In the past, elective surgery was the predominant in-patient workload of consultant surgeons. Recently, emergency cases are forming an increasing part of the in-patient workload. ⋯ Emergency surgical admissions have increased and now exceed elective admissions. This has placed considerable strain on our limited resources and our ability to cope with increasing demand of elective surgery.

Paediatric neurological disorders constitute a major cause of disability in childhood. Children in the developing countries are disproportionately affected and in addition face the added burden of poverty, inadequate health facilities, stigmatisation and lack of facilities for rehabilitative care. ⋯ Paediatric neurological disorders constitute a major reason for paediatric specialist care in Ibadan, Nigeria. Preventable causes play a major role in the aetiology of the major paediatric neurological disorders seen in this part of the world.

Caesarean section outcome in eclamptic patients: a comparison of infiltration and general anaesthesia.
Eclamptic patients undergoing caesarean delivery present extreme management problems for both obstetricians and anaesthetists. These problems reflect a poor maternal and perinatal outcome. ⋯ Local infiltrative anaesthesia appears to have a better maternal and perinatal outcome than general anaesthesia for eclamptic patients undergoing caesarean section.

Falls represent a major threat to health status and independence in the elderly, causing pain and cessation of physical activities, whether due to fear of falling, declining mobility or balance. ⋯ Falls are significant causative factors of pain and avoidable disability. Their prevention in the elderly should be a major concern in our environment.
