Pathology of the higher airways in children is seen rather often. A child with obstruction of the upper airways has to be examined with extreme caution and treated without delay. The main causes of obstruction of the higher airways are the infections of the airways, especially epiglottitis and laryngotracheobronchitis.

Ultrasonography has emerged in recent literature as a reliable technique to visualise the infant hip. Its advantages are that non-osseous structures can be seen as well as bone, that a dynamic investigation can be performed, and that it lacks ionising radiation. This article describes the results of a screening study in 307 newborns. 13.4% of all clinically normal (stable) hips showed ultrasound abnormalities. 96.3% of these normalised spontaneously, however. ⋯ Furthermore, in a group of older children, Graf's alpha angle was related to the acetabular index on the radiograph. There was no linear relationship, but a tendency was noted to find higher (better) alpha angles together with lower (better) acetabular indices. Possibly ultrasound is superior to standard radiography in depicting subtle disturbances in ossification of the lateral edge of the acetabulum.

[Hypnosis for pain control during lumbar puncture and bone marrow aspirations in children with cancer].
Pediatric oncology patients undergo medical treatments which often require repeated lumbar punctures and bone marrow aspirations, in general a painful and anxiety-provoking experience. We offered a few patients the opportunity to volunteer for hypnotic help in pain control. The technique of the hypnosis put in practice is described extensively. With some adaptations it can be used for various diagnostical and/or therapeutical medical examinations that are painful for the child and/or anxiety-provoking.

Case Reports[2 newborn infants with severe arrhythmia caused by hyperkalemia].
Two newborn infants with ventricular arrhythmias secondary to hyperkalaemia are presented. One child also showed a decreased serum calcium concentration. There is scanty literature concerning the often life threatening cardiac arrhythmias due to hyperkalaemia in the newborn infants. Treatment of the cardiac arrhythmias require intravenous calcium gluconat and sodium bicarbonate infusion beside lowering the serum potassium level in the usual way.
