Comparative Study[Compared results of flail chests treatments : standard internal pneumatic stabilization, new technics of assisted ventilation, osteosynthesis (author's transl)].
The analysis of 170 cases of flail chests, divide into three groups according to the type of treatment, proves the efficiency of the new technics of assisted ventilation and of the osteosynthesis by Judet clasps. The most significant advantages of those two complementary methods are a lowered mortality rate and a reduced frequency of refractory hypoxy and infectious complications.

Case Reports[Retrosternal goitres. Study of a series of 34 cases (author's transl)].
On the basis of study of 34 records of patients operated upon for retrosternal goitre, the authors attempt to assess the diagnostic approach and methods of treatment. Relatively rare (6% in our total group of patients undergoing thyroidectomy for cervical goitres), and particularly frequent amongst the elderly woman, retrosternal goitres often present as the result of a complication. The diagnosis is usually easy on the basis of standard chest X-rays. ⋯ The treatment of a retrosternal goitre is usually simple, as long as the correct plane of cleavage is found at the outset. Surgical excision by simple cervicotomy is standard, even when the tumour is large in size. Finally, the authors emphasise the value of surgery earlier and more often, even in the absence of complications.

Case Reports[Rupture of the stomach after insertion of a Linton-Nachlas sound (author's transl)].
Rupture of the stomach occurred after insertion of a Linton-Nachlas sound in a 91-year-old patient. Possible mechanisms for the lesion were increased pressure from accumulation of blood in the stomach or the herniation of the balloon of the sound. Recovery was uneventful after intensive care therapy and suture of the wound. The possibility of such an accident should not discredit the use of hemostatic sounds.

The authors report 16 cases of cervical esophagus injuries. In two patients, they followed a closed injury to the neck, in six cases, wounds from firearms or other weapons. ⋯ Only one of the 8 patients operated upon within 12 hours following injury developed cervicomediastinal complications, while seven of the 8 cases operated upon after this period developed mediastinitis or a fistula. Radiological examination with an opaque medium and urgent operation combining drainage and suture are essential when injury to the esophagus is suspected, in order to obtain early diagnosis and good results.

Case Reports[Intra-aortic obstruction with a balloon catheter. Means of control of massive retroperitoneal hemorrhage of aortic origin (author's transl)].
Temporary hemostasis with an inflatable intra-arterial balloon is useful in injuries of the great vessels. It permitted repair under satisfactory conditions of a perforating wound of the abdominal aorta.
