Clinico-roentgeno-morphological investigation established a marked regression of tumor in as many as 86.1% out of 230 patients with stage IIB and III breast cancer who had undergone radiothermotherapy. Morphologically confirmed complete regression was observed in 12.6% of patients with lesions smaller than 3 cm in diameter at presentation. Treatment was followed by massive necrosis, dystrophic changes and inhibition of mitotic activity of tumor cells in patients with stage III cancer and those with stage IIB who had presented with tumors larger than 3 cm in diameter. However, in all these cases viable tumor cells were still observed at the periphery of tumor.

Recent years have witnessed an improvement in cancer patient registration procedures (due to the introduction of the automated system for cancer information processing), cancer control establishment network and the level of oncological awareness of general practitioners. The need of taking fresh measures aimed at improving diagnosis of malignancies of the stomach, breast and cervix uteri which are the leading factors of morbidity and mortality in the Chuvash ASSR is discussed.

Peridural injections of morphine were given to 180 incurable cancer patients suffering chronic pain. The effectiveness of the said procedure as well as its side-effects were assessed. A relationship between the external respiration parameters, on the one hand, and drug dosage and time postinjection, on the other, was studied. The data obtained point to the effectiveness of the said method and suggest that it be used as a universal procedure for the treatment of intractable pain in incurable patients.
