The purpose of this study was to investigate the occurrence and duration of extended blinks ≥ 70 msec and their associated interblink intervals in normal subjects and in subjects with mild to moderate dry eye. ⋯ THIS STUDY REPORTS THREE CENTRAL FINDINGS: blink duration tended to be longer in subjects with dry eye; a lengthening of the interblink interval after an extended blink occurred in subjects with dry eye but not in those without dry eye; and a longer blink duration was associated with a significantly increased interblink interval ratio in all subjects.

The aim of this study is to provide data on the controversial issue of whether handheld measurements of intraocular pressure (IOP) are capable of accurately predicting elevated intracranial pressure (ICP) in patients undergoing lumbar puncture (LP). ⋯ Handheld ocular tonometry has poor sensitivity and specificity for the prediction of increased ICP and is not an effective tool for screening for ICP in the ED or in the neurology department.

Application of 2-octyl-cyanoacrylate for corneal perforation and glaucoma filtering bleb leak.
This paper reports on the efficacy of a tissue adhesive, 2-octyl-cyanoacrylate, in the treatment of corneal perforation and glaucoma filtering bleb leak. ⋯ Four patients with corneal perforation or bleb leak were successfully managed using 2-octyl-cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive. This simple and easy surgical technique may become an alternative therapeutic option for corneal perforation or bleb leak, although several applications of this tissue adhesive may be required. Although 2-octyl-cyanoacrylate was toxic to HeLa cells, no adverse clinical effects were noted using this adhesive.

To evaluate postoperative pain, corneal epithelial healing, development of corneal haze, refractive outcomes, and corneal aberrations in a novel one-step, modified transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), termed All-surface laser ablation (ASLA), compared to conventional, alcohol-assisted PRK. ⋯ This study shows that the ASLA technique may have a future role in refractive surgery, due to the fact that it offers faster epithelial healing, lower pain scores, and significantly less haze formation.

Right to left shunting, usually caused by a patent foramen ovale (PFO), is associated with migraine and visual aura. It is unknown if patients who present with visual aura without headache behave similarly to those experiencing typical migraine headache with aura. The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of right to left shunting in patients who present with migraine aura without headache and evaluate the response to PFO closure. ⋯ There is an increased prevalence of PFO among patients with migraine aura without headache. The closure of PFO correlates with improvement of the visual aura, suggesting a causative association between the presence of PFO and both visual aura and migraine headaches. Ophthalmologists should be aware of the association of right to left shunts with visual aura.
