[Postoperative delirium and abnormal behaviour related with preoperative quality of life in elderly patients].
Postoperative delirium and abnormal behavior were studied in 160 patients aged 60 and over with relation to their QOL assessed before surgical operation. QOL was assessed physically, psychologically, mentally and socially. Physical status was assessed with ability in daily life, seeing, hearing and severity of disease. ⋯ Abnormal behaviour of demented patients was not defined as due to delirium or as dementia itself, so it was included in the classification "delirium and abnormal behaviour" because of the same aspect in terms of practical nursing care. The following factors were found to be statistically related to the occurrence of postoperative delirium and abnormal behaviour: disability in daily life, dementia, disturbance of hearing. Scores of HDS-R was closely related with the possibility of postoperative delirium and abnormal behaviour.

Case Reports[A case of recurrent cerebral hemorrhage considered to be cerebral amyloid angiopathy by cerebrospinal fluid examination].
A 73-year-old man was admitted with gait disturbance and dysarthria. He showed right-side cerebellar ataxia. Computed tomography of brain showed left thalamic bleeding. ⋯ Therefore we suspected cystatin C deposit amyloid angiopathy. In this case, thalamic hemorrhage was initially thought to be amyloid angiopathy. In cases of cerebral hemorrhage in the elderly without hypertension, we must be considered amyloid angiopathy.

Case Reports[Three cases of Chilaiditi's syndrome--hepatodiaphragmatic interposition of the colon].
Three cases of Chilaiditi's syndrome are reported. Case 1: A 56-year-old woman was admitted with dysphagia. She had been suffering from progressive systemic sclerosis for 16 years. ⋯ Repeated chest x-ray examinations constantly showed Chilaiditi's syndrome. He died of pneumonia two years later. The pathogenesis of Chilaiditi's syndrome was discussed and the literature was reviewed.

Comparative StudyInternational comparison in gerontological education--Canada.
The undergraduate programs of geriatric education in medical schools across Canada are variable, and there has not been definition of core content or core clinical experience, although these processes are underway. At UBC in June 1990, the first Canadian Summer Institute took place in Vancouver and medical students representing 16 medical schools in Canada attended the week-long program. Students left the program keen to start student interest groups in their schools. ⋯ The College of Family Practice has elected not to have a program for certification in geriatrics for family physicians. Gerontology and geriatrics are being incorporated into undergraduate and graduate curriculae, driven by the demographic imperative. There remains much to be done.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

[Morphological changes accompanying compensatory lung growth after pneumonectomy in rats].
To elucidate morphological change of alveoli in compensatory lung growth, left pneumonectomy was performed on male 4 weeks-old rats (Fischer-344) and light microscopic morphometry, scanning electron microscopic study and histochemistry using anti-bromodeoxyuridine were made. The wet lung weight and lung volume of the residual lungs in the pneumonectomized rats reached the same as those of sham operated rats at one and two weeks after the operation, respectively. ⋯ The data of histochemistry suggest that in pneumonectomized rats the alveoli beneath the pleura (less than 2 mm) included an increased number of S phase cells compared with those of deeper areas. From these morphological changes in the lungs of the pneumonectomized rats it is possible to suggest a hypothesis that stretch stimulation is the first trigger in compensatory lung growth.
