During the last five years, we have had to fly 560 primary and 1150 secondary missions with the rescue helicopter of the Ulm Rescue Centre. This relationship of approximately 1 : 2 is distinctly different from the numbers obtained in other helicopter bases. ⋯ During primary and secondary missions, the ability to transport emergency patients to the nearest qualified hospital by helicopter, which is a mobile intensive care unit, is of equal importance. In the future, rescue helicopters will have to take these requirements into account by providing the necessary equipment and more especially, by providing sufficient space to carry out emergency diagnostic and therapeutic treatment.

All colloidal volume substitutes carry the risk of anaphylactoid reactions. The general incidence of 0.03% is low; however severe complications can occur. There are differnet pathomechanisms involved in the induction of anaphylactoid reactions after infusion of different colloids. ⋯ The addition of stabilizers to the plasma protein solutions can alter the immunogenicity of the protein molecule. Antibodies of the classes IgG and IgM seem to play a role in severe dextran incompatibility. There was a direct correlation of the intensity of the clinical symptoms with the anti-dextran-antibody titer.

[Blood picture in lactate acidosis. Part 2: acid-base equilibrium and lactate].
A differentiation between lactate emia (lactic acid emia) and lactate acidosis (lactic acidosis) is made. The normal value for blood lactate concentration is 1-2 mmol/1. The term lactate emia is used for lactate values between 2-6 mmol/1. ⋯ Furthermore the different buffer mechanisms are evaluated in respect to their influence on the pH of the blood and to lactate metabolism. Especially the mechanism of respiratory compensation for metabolic acidosis is discussed. It is stated that for the diagnosis of lactate acidosis the blood-pH and the bicarbonate concentration should be measured.

[Dermolipectomy for the reduction of redundant skin and local lipodystrophy].
Operative techniques by Pitanguy for abdominoplasty and fat reduction in trochanteric lipodystrophy and their results are presented. In comparison to most other procedures this technique shows the following advantages: low and horizontal final scar; the possibility to remove periumbilical fat and skin by transposition of the umbilicus; a diastasis of the mm.recti can be corrected and infraumbilical scars can be removed. ⋯ During the past 18 months we treated 20 patients using Pitanguys technique. The results are definitely better than those achieved with other methods.
