The prevalence and causes of anemia were studied in 294 Druze children aged 10 months to six years. The hemoglobin level was less than 11.0 g/dl in 19%; none of these anemic children had folate deficiency. ⋯ Mean corpuscular hemoglobin and transferrin saturation were abnormal in greater than 90% of anemic children, whereas serum ferritin and total-iron-binding capacity were abnormal in only 70%. In view of its limited sensitivity, serum ferritin appears to be a less useful diagnostic aid in iron-deficiency anemia than other, less expensive laboratory methods.

Femoral osteotomy for correction of sequelae of conservative treatment of congenital dislocation of the hip.
After conservative treatment of congenital dislocation of the hip angular deviations may remain uncorrected. Spontaneous correction may occur but if not, severe secondary arthrotic changes may develop. We performed intertrochanteric osteotomies on 81 hips in 67 children, 14 bilateral. ⋯ The neck-shaft angle was much less deviated. The results were excellent in 57 (70.4%) hips, good in 16 (19.7%), fair in 5 (6.2%) and poor in 3 (3.7%). After osteotomy, two cases developed coxa vara with secondary overriding trochanters and four cases developed "swan-neck" valgus.

Steady-state serum quinidine concentrations were monitored in 24 patients with acute myocardial infarction who were on a 1,300-mg daily dosing regimen. Mean serum concentrations spanned the therapeutic range, from 2 to 6 microgram/ml in 21 patients. In no patient was the level of 7 microgram/ml exceeded. ⋯ Variability of the mean serum quinidine levels among individuals was 41%. Variability within individual patients was only 18%. In the individual patient receiving prophylactic oral quinidine therapy, monitoring serum quinidine levels appears to be an accurate, reproducible and pharmacologically significant guideline to therapy.

Immediate postabortion insertion of an intrauterine device (IUD) was performed in 162 nulliparous adolescents. No insertion failures occurred. ⋯ Overall complications were greater for the Lippes loop than for the other two devices. The results suggest that immediate postabortion insertion should be considered for poorly motivated or uneducated adolescent girls who have already failed in contraception and require abortion.
