Emergency department visits due to coronary artery disease during COVID-19 in Finland: A register-based study.
Aims: This multi-centre study examined the effects of restricted availability of health-care services during the COVID-19 pandemic on treatment of coronary artery disease (CAD) in Finland. Methods: Data on referrals to cardiological units (n=81,008), emergency department (ED) visits (n=10,001) and hospitalisations (n=8654) for CAD were collected from three large Finnish hospitals, and incidences were calculated per 100,000 persons for the years 2017 through 2020. Year 2020 was compared to the reference years 2017-2019 by incidence rate ratios (IRR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). ⋯ ED visits due to chronic CAD increased prominently during in April and May compared to the corresponding months in the reference years (IRR=1.49, 95% CI 1.23-1.81 in April; IRR=1.57, 95% CI 1.32-1.89 in May) and remained elevated until the end of 2020, with an increase in annual incidence of 17% (IRR=1.17, 95% CI 1.11-1.24). Conclusions: The first COVID-19 wave decreased ED visits due to acute coronary syndromes and increased those due to chronic CAD. The changes in referral and ED visit incidences during the second wave were rather modest.

Women and intimate partner violence: Prevalence of hospital visits and nature of injuries in the Icelandic population.
Aims: The purpose of this study was to analyse the prevalence of hospital visits and nature of injuries caused by intimate partner violence (IPV) against women and associated costs. Methods: All visits to Landspitali National University Hospital by women 18 years or older subjected to IPV, inflicted by a current or former male partner during 2005-2014, were observed and analysed. Information was obtained on number, date and time of visits and admissions, place of occurrence, patients' and perpetrators' age and relationship, number of perpetrators, medical diagnosis, aetiology, injury severity and cost. ⋯ Conclusions: The total number of new visits resulting from IPV was 1454, and prevalence was 1.69 per 1000 women in the capital area over the research period. The majority of women were shown to have minor physical injuries of a superficial nature, located on the upper body. Although a low percentage of women were admitted, the associated cost for visits and admissions was substantial.

Interventions to suppress the coronavirus pandemic will increase unemployment and lead to many premature deaths.
Interventions to suppress the coronavirus pandemic have led to economic recession and higher unemployment, which will increase mortality and decrease quality of life. The aim of this article is to estimate the consequences on mortality and life expectancy of increased unemployment rates due to the coronavirus pandemic in Sweden and other countries. ⋯ Interventions to suppress the coronavirus pandemic include the shut-down of economic activities and lead to increased all-cause mortality. These public health effects must be considered in the decision-making process and should be added to overall estimates of the effects of the pandemic on public health.

An overall long-term strategy for managing the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is presented. This strategy will need to be maintained until herd immunity is achieved, hopefully through vaccination rather than natural infection. ⋯ Guided by reliable surveillance data, distancing should be continuously optimised down to the lowest sustainable level that guarantees a low and stable infection rate in order to balance its wide-ranging negative effects on public health. The qualitative mixture of social-distancing measures also needs to be carefully optimised in order to minimise social costs.

The Norwegian Armed Forces Health Registry conscription board health examinations 1968-2018.
Aim: The aim of the study is to encourage further research initiatives and collaborations based on Norwegian Armed Forces Health Registry (NAFHR) data by presenting basic information on the data contained therein. Methods: We describe how conscription board health examinations (CBHEs) are carried out, how results are recorded in the NAFHR, and the completeness of NAFHR data that are electronically available for research purposes. Results: In December 2018, the NAFHR contained data on nearly 1.5 million Norwegian citizens (95% men) who attended CBHE in 1968-2018 at the age of 17-19 years. ⋯ Unique, national personal identification numbers may be used to link the NAFHR to other health registries or data sources for public health research. Conclusions: The NAFHR contains CBHE data on the majority of Norwegian men and a substantial number of women born since 1950. NAFHR data represent a valuable resource for research collaborations.
