Patterns of tobacco use: a 10-year follow-up study of smoking and snus habits in a middle-aged Swedish population.
To study longitudinal patterns of tobacco use over a 10-year period among middle-aged men and women in Vaösterbotten County, Northern Sweden. ⋯ The majority of middle-aged Swedish men and women in this cohort that quit smoking did so without becoming snus dependent. In spite of an increasing use of snus, overall there was a decline in the number of people using tobacco products.

Comparative StudyGender differences in daily smoking prevalence in different age strata: a population-based study in southern Sweden.
To investigate gender differences in daily smoking prevalence in different age groups in southern Sweden. ⋯ For the first time in Sweden women have a higher prevalence of daily smoking than men. The odds ratios of daily smoking are highest among women compared to men in the youngest age group of 18-24 years and the odds ratios decrease with increasing age. The findings point to a serious public health problem. Strategic interventions targeting young women's tobacco smoking are needed.

Comparative StudyMortality among disability pensioners in Norway and Sweden 1990--96: comparative prospective cohort study.
The aim of the study was to assess excess mortality related to disability pension (DP) status and DP diagnoses in Norway and Sweden during 1990-96. ⋯ The study confirmed an increased mortality rate among disability pensioners, except for women with musculoskeletal diagnoses. The mortality pattern related to DP diagnoses was similar in the two countries. A high frequency of musculoskeletal DP diagnoses among women with DP in Sweden explained a lower mortality rate as compared to Norway.

Schoolchildren's health as judged by Swedish school nurses -- a national survey.
To use school nurses' knowledge and experience for a better understanding of schoolchildren's health problems and their association to socioeconomic background and gender. ⋯ School nurses work closely with the children and meet them continuously during the school age period. They have a genuine knowledge of schoolchildren's health, which should be used even more, both in research and practice. The results may be applicable in other countries with similarly organized school health systems.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyA randomized multifactorial intervention study for prevention of ischaemic heart disease (Inter99): the long-term effect on physical activity.
To examine the effect of a randomized multiple risk factor intervention study for prevention of ischaemic heart disease (IHD) on the development in physical activity over a 36-month period. ⋯ Only men seemed to benefit from the intervention.
