Characteristics of New Opioid Use Among Medicare Beneficiaries: Identifying High-Risk Patterns.
Opioid prescription patterns, including long-term use, multiple prescribers, and high opioid doses, increase the risk for adverse outcomes; however, previous research in older adult populations has primarily described opioid dose patterns using average daily dose measures or using very high thresholds (i.e., > 100 morphine milligram equivalents [MME] per day). ⋯ No funding supported this study. Raman reports research grants from GlaxoSmithKline not related to this study. Roberts was supported by a CTSA grant from NCATS awarded to the University of Kansas Medical Center for Frontiers: The Heartland Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (#KL2TR000119). The other authors have no potential conflicts to report.

Impact of Pain Severity and Opioid Use on Health Care Resource Utilization and Costs Among Patients with Knee and Hip Osteoarthritis.
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis. The primary symptom of OA-pain-increases the disease burden by negatively affecting daily activities and quality of life. Opioids are often prescribed for treating pain in patients with OA but have questionable benefit-risk profiles. There is limited evidence on the economic impact of pain severity and opioid use among patients with OA. ⋯ Funding for this study was contributed by Regeneron Pharmaceuticals and Teva Pharmaceutical Industries. Wei is an employee at Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, with stock ownership. Gandhi was an employee at Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, with stock ownership, at the time of this study. Blauer-Peterson and Johnson are employees of Optum, which was contracted to conduct the research for this study.

Observational StudyQuantification of Economic Impact of Drug Wastage in Oral Oncology Medications: Comparison of 3 Methods Using Palbociclib and Ribociclib in Advanced or Metastatic Breast Cancer.
Discarding unused drugs after dose changes or discontinuation can significantly affect pharmacy budgets. This is especially concerning for expensive oncology agents. However, few economic studies account for drug wastage, providing an inaccurate estimate of a drug's actual economic cost, cost-effectiveness, and value. ⋯ This study received financial support from Novartis Pharmaceuticals, which has products approved for treatment of breast cancer. Tang was employed by Novartis during this study; Zacker and Dalal are employed by Novartis and own company stock. Biskupiak, Brixner, and Oderda received payment from Novartis for this study. Brixner serves as a consultant for Millcreek Outcomes Group and also declares consulting fees from Abbvie, AstraZeneca, Abbott, Becton Dickinson, and Xcenda, unrelated to this study.

Strategies for Overcoming Barriers to Adopting Biosimilars and Achieving Goals of the Biologics Price Competition and Innovation Act: A Survey of Managed Care and Specialty Pharmacy Professionals.
The Biologics Price Competition and Innovation Act (BPCIA) of 2009, which included pathways for FDA approval of biosimilar products, was designed to promote more affordable, expanded patient access to biologic therapies. Achieving these BPCIA goals depends on overcoming formidable barriers to biosimilar adoption. Managed care and specialty pharmacy professionals are uniquely qualified to inform initiatives to address these barriers. ⋯ The survey study reported in this article was part of a continuing education program funded by an independent educational grant, which was awarded by Sandoz, a Novartis Division, to PRIME Education. The Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP) received grant funding from PRIME to assist in developing the survey and writing the manuscript. The grantor had no role in the study design, execution, analysis, or reporting. Greene and Pardo are employed by PRIME. Singh and Carden are employed by AMCP. Greene, Singh, Carden, and Pardo have no other disclosures. Lichtenstein received an honorarium from PRIME for serving as faculty for the continuing education program and has been a consultant for Pfizer, Cellceutix, and Merck.

Patient Support Program Increased Medication Adherence with Lower Total Health Care Costs Despite Increased Drug Spending.
The U.S. health care system is currently evolving from a volume-based care to a value-based care approach, which is in part supported by the introduction of patient support programs (PSP). For patients treated with adalimumab (ADA), the addition of a dedicated, trained nurse to the PSP (HUMIRA Complete, rolled out nationally in 2015) provides further emphasis on value-based care. ⋯ Design, study conduct, and financial support for this study were provided by AbbVie.
