We report the first case of Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome without urinary obstruction, but with a congenital urethral polyp as a tumor protruding from the external urinary meatus. Although oxidative stress-related diseases mostly affect neonates with extremely low birthweight, healthy preterm and term newborns may also be at risk of oxidative damage. There have been studies concerning factors that affect the level of oxidative stress biomarkers in term and preterm neonates, but there has not been a study of the reference values of oxidative stress biomarkers in healthy newborns having no risk factors. The aim of the present study was to clarify this issue. ⋯ This study can be used as a guide for the reference range of TAC and TOS values for healthy term newborns.

Testing of midwife neonatal resuscitation skills with a simulator manikin in a low-risk delivery unit.
Expertise in neonatal resuscitation is essential for personnel involved in the care of newborns. In this observational cohort study the skills of 52 midwives in a simulated scenario were assessed. ⋯ Many midwives had imperfect resuscitation skills. A 1 day course improved such skills. The standard scenario is an objective and useful performance marker in assessing and documenting improvements in competence in delivery room resuscitation.

The aim of this study was to assess outcomes of medical and surgical treatment of intratonsillar abscess in children. ⋯ Clinically stable children with intratonsillar abscess or phlegmon respond to i.v. antibiotic therapy. Surgical drainage can accomplish clinical resolution in the presence of a combination of intra- and peri-tonsillar abscess, airway compromise, or unresponsiveness to medical treatment.
