In a prospective study, the Authors present an analysis on the use of surgical adhesives in the wounds treatment. In sixteen months we have treated 157 patients exclusively with a surgical tissue adhesive 2-octylcianoacrylate to repair traumatic wounds and surgical ones. In the Emergency Department were treated 110 patients (70%) with 2-octylcianoacrylate for skin incisions, lacerations and the length of lesion. ⋯ In both groups of patients, the surgical adhesive has made possible a simple and quick wounds repair as well as good aesthetic results. No relevant complications have been arisen. The writers recommend the surgical adhesive in Emergency Department to abridge waiting time and to avoid the psychological impact caused by local anaesthesia, suture and medications especially in the treatment of all wounds types in children.

[Laparoscopic surgery of varicocele. Role of total endovenous anesthesia in same-day discharge].
The success of out-patients laparoscopic surgery depends on a careful selection of patients and the ability of anesthetic technique to ensure a rapid emergence from anesthesia, with a satisfactory control of postoperative pain and the absence of side effects. This study was undertaken to investigate the influence of a total intravenous anesthetic management on the recovery process after laparoscopic varicocelectomy. Fifty-three ASA 1 patients aged 12-41 yrs (mean 26.02) scheduled to undergo laparoscopic varicocelectomy as day surgery procedure were included in this study. ⋯ One patient was admitted to hospital for an overnight stay for walking dizziness; another was readmitted for surgical complications. This results suggest that the proposed anesthetic management provided adequate pain control with minimun postoperative nausea and a good recovery rate. This permitted a short postoperative hospital stay without compromising in safety, efficacy, or patient satisfaction.

Review Case Reports[Colorectal cancer in pregnancy. A case report].
Carcinoma of the colon-rectum during pregnancy is rare (0.1-0.001%). Prognosis is severe as it is generally made at an advanced stage. ⋯ Early diagnosis is difficult because symptoms of colorectal cancer (vomiting, constipation, anemia, rectal bleeding, abdominal pain and distension, etc.) can be related to pregnancy. Gestational age and operability of the tumor are discussed by current medical and surgical management.

[Guidelines for the routine assessment of respiratory surgical risk: thoracic radiography].
Through the three years between June 1995 and June 1998 the authors applied an evaluation schedule for the respiratory surgical risk to all the patients undergoing general surgery. Chest X-ray was included in this schedule as a first-level test and it was performed systematically on all the patients. ⋯ Therefore, chest X-ray should be considered a second-level test, to be performed on the basis of a precise clinical query only. This way a significant health-care cost reduction could be achieved, without affecting the quality of patient's management.

[Chondro-costal abnormalities of anterior wall of the chest: operative indications and surgical technique].
The aim of this study is to evaluate the utility of surgical treatment in patients with pectus excavatum (PE) or pectus carinatum (PC). Fifteen patients underwent surgical treatment because of their psycological and anatomical condition, more serious in 6 patients (5 with PE and 1 with PC). ⋯ The Authors recommend surgical operation in the post-puberal age up to 21 years because of good results obtained using Ravitch approach (only 1 case of partial relapse of PE), even though modified in PE cases with the application of flat steel prosthesis and in PC cases for uncutting the perichondral beds. The choice of surgical procedure derives, in our opinion, from the correction of these anatomic deformities and from the greater sense of improved cosmesis that might result.
