Comparative Study[Total thyroidectomy with preservation of the parathyroid glands].
The operative treatment of thyroid pathology has to be distinguished for benign and malignant pathology. The major complications associated with thyroid surgery are injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve and hypoparathyroidism. ⋯ Postoperative hypoparathyroidism results in patients with symptomatic hypocalcemia, transitory and permanent hypoparathyroidism. Subtotal thyroidectomy is used for the treatment of benign thyroid pathology while tumors are treated by total thyroidectomy with neck dissection.

Review Case Reports[Cystic lymphangioma of the retroperitoneum. A case report].
Cystic lymphangioma of the retroperitoneum is a primary mesodermal derived benign neoplasm, arising from retroperitoneal lymphatics. The Authors report a case of cystic lymphangioma of the retroperitoneum recently observed, and a review of the international literature registering 181 cases from 1958 up to nowadays. Retroperitoneal localization, sub-clinic evolution and the impossibility to preoperatively define the histological type of the tumour, in spite of the modern diagnostic techniques, explain the difficulties to reach a correct differential diagnosis. The authors conclude that surgery only allows to exactly localize the tumour, yet the definition of cystic lymphangioma is an histological goal.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical Trial[Perioperative pain and stress: a comparison between video laparoscopic cholecystectomy and "open" cholecystectomy].
Pain and endocrine-metabolic response to surgical stress, during surgery and in the early postoperative period, was compared in two groups of patients affected by gallstones and randomly assigned to Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy or Open Cholecystectomy. Pain was assessed by the VAS method also taking into account the need of analgesic administration in the postoperative period. ⋯ In the intraoperative period laparoscopic cholecystectomy plasma hormone levels overlapped the open cholecystectomy ones, while in the postoperative period a constant increase in PRL and CORT levels was registered in the open cholecystectomy group demonstrating a prolonged stressful condition. The end results of this study show that laparoscopic cholecystectomy has major advantages than open cholecystectomy in the treatment of gallstones as far as pain and endocrine-metabolic response are concerned.

[The role of echography in assessing abdominal trauma: the experience of 1750 cases].
The authors report their experience of 1750 ultrasonic examinations of the abdomen performed in emergency, showing the value and usefulness of echo-scans in the evaluation of abdominal traumas. Easy and quick to perform, it permits an accurate diagnosis with a low ratio of error. Particularly, ultrasonography gives the chance to operate in emergency patients with steady haemodynamic conditions and to follow up those with partial parenchymal lesions, monitoring the clinical status in order to properly choose between conservative treatment and delayed surgery.

[Trauma: when the liver "ruptures".... Our experience of 125 cases].
Liver and spleen are the organs most frequently involved in the blunt abdominal trauma. Prognosis is severe in those cases classified as IV or V according to the More score. The imaging techniques, particularly CT scan, offer today a possibility in the nonoperative management of a selected group of haemodynamically stable patients, therefore reducing the need of surgery. The authors' experience in 125 patients observed from 1983 to 1991 is reported.
