Assessment of an electronic daily diary in patients with overactive bladder.
To assess the effectiveness of a portable electronic diary as a data collection device for overactive bladder symptoms, and to evaluate its level of patient acceptability compared with a conventional paper-based voiding diary. ⋯ We confirmed that the electronic diary is a novel method of collecting clinically relevant symptom data from patients with an overactive bladder. In addition, the ease-of-use ratings support the use of the electronic diary as a superior alternative to paper diaries, providing real-time data which can be rapidly analysed, and thus allowing a speedy review of data during ongoing clinical studies.

To examine whether orthotopic neobladder replacement using either ileum or colon segments results in increased oxidative stress, by measuring urinary 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), one of the most commonly used markers for evaluating oxidative DNA damage. ⋯ These findings suggest that creating an ileal neobladder caused significantly greater oxidative stress than a colon neobladder, ileal conduit, or that in healthy controls. Therefore, it is recommended to conduct a careful long-term follow-up considering the possible development of malignant disease after urinary diversion, especially by an ileal neobladder.

To determine whether hormonal manipulation improves the biochemical outcome for men with intermediate or high-risk prostate cancer and undergoing permanent brachytherapy with or without supplemental external beam radiation therapy. ⋯ In patients treated by permanent prostate brachytherapy, hormonal manipulation improved the biochemical outcome for those at high-risk and those with an initial PSA of >or= 10 ng/mL, but not for those with intermediate-risk features. The use of hormonal therapy for> 4 months conferred no additional biochemical advantage over short-course regimens. Because the follow-up in hormone-naïve patients was longer than that for those receiving hormonal manipulation, additional follow-up will be mandatory to confirm the durability of these findings.

To assess the long-term efficacy and safety of two-stage sacral neuromodulation with an implantable pulse generator (IPG) in patients treated for urinary urge incontinence (UI) and/or urinary retention (UR). ⋯ The long-term results of the two-stage implantation show clinically and statistically significant improvements, probably because the implantation of the lead (first stage) more closely resembles the final therapy. If a temporary PNE test is not optimal (lead migration, longer testing needed), the two-stage technique can offer a good and safe alternative of comparable efficacy in the long-term. If the two-stage technique had not been available to these 12 patients they would not have been offered neuromodulation.
