Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study
Overall survival in patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma initially treated with bevacizumab plus interferon-α2a and subsequent therapy with tyrosine kinase inhibitors: a retrospective analysis of the phase III AVOREN trial.
• To retrospectively evaluate the effect of subsequent tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) after first-line bevacizumab + interferon-α2a (IFN) or IFN + placebo in the phase III AVOREN (Avastin and Roferon in Renal Cell Carcinoma) trial. ⋯ • These retrospective exploratory data of sequential bevacizumab + IFN followed by TKIs in patients able to receive multiple lines of therapy suggest that sequential therapy could be a promising approach to improve patient outcomes in mRCC.

To evaluate the trifecta outcome and its preoperative predictors in a series of consecutive patients who underwent robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (RALP). ⋯ Using validated questionnaires to assess functional outcomes, we found that 57% of our patients undergoing nerve-sparing RALP achieved the trifecta outcome 12 months after surgery. Patient age at surgery and preoperative erectile function were the only independent predictors of trifecta rates.

To determine the adequacy of T2 prostate cancer (PCa) sub-staging as an independent Predictor of biochemical disease-free survival (bDFS) after radical prostatectomy. ⋯ Pathological T2a prostate cancer has significantly higher bDFS than the pT2b or pT2c sub-groups in univariate but not multivariate analyses. Different pathological features should be explored to create more meaningfully predictive pathological T2 sub-divisions.

Surveillance is a standard management approach following orchidectomy for stage I non-seminomatous and mixed germ cell tumours. Patients who relapse following this approach are treated with cisplatin-based chemotherapy, with retroperitoneal lymph node dissection considered for patients with post-chemotherapy residual masses. ⋯ We recommend that late-relapsing patients with normal serum alpha fetoprotein levels undergo biopsy to define histologically the nature of recurrent disease. In those with pure seminoma retroperitoneal lymph node dissection for post chemotherapy residual masses can be avoided.
