To study the prevalence and bother of nocturia, and sleep interruptions in an unselected population of Danish men and women aged 60-80 years. ⋯ The prevalence of nocturia increased with age. There was no difference between the genders in the overall prevalence of nocturia, but nocturia of > or = 2 voids/night was more frequent in men. The degree of bother increased with the severity of nocturia, even after correcting for generic quality of life, and the younger groups were the most bothered. Nocturia was the major reason for waking at night, followed by thirst.

To evaluate ultrasensitive (US) measurements of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level in men with prostate cancer, and to correlate the findings with currently accepted values for PSA recurrence, as PSA is widely accepted as a surrogate marker for disease recurrence after treatment for prostate cancer, and although USPSA assays can detect minute quantities of PSA, the significance of this is unclear. ⋯ After RP patients might have PSA levels detectable by USPSA assays, i.e. <0.1 ng/mL. The amount of 'background noise' produced within this range precludes the ability to use this test as a clinical indicator of disease recurrence. However, undetectable levels appear to confer a favourable prognosis.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study
An improved technique for controlling bleeding during simple retropubic prostatectomy: a randomized controlled study.
To compare two techniques of open prostatic adenectomy (OPA) for controlling bleeding, as OPA is the most effective surgical method for alleviating obstructive symptoms related to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) but there is always a risk of peri-operative bleeding. ⋯ The Millin technique, as modified by one of the present authors, can significantly control bleeding during and after surgery, and reduce transfusion rates, when compared to the classic transvesical prostatectomy.

To report the biochemical progression-free survival (BPFS) in hormone-naive men aged < or = 54 years who underwent brachytherapy with or without supplemental external beam radiation therapy (EBRT), as despite favourable biochemical control rates with brachytherapy, there remains a reluctance to recommend non-extirpative approaches for young men with clinically localized prostate cancer. ⋯ Hormone-naive patients aged < or = 54 years have a high probability of a good 8-year BPFS after permanent interstitial brachytherapy with or without supplemental EBRT.

To assess, in a prospective study, whether botulinum toxin-type A (BTX-A) injected into the detrusor muscle, can be used as a day-case treatment for drug-resistant neurogenic detrusor overactivity (NDO) in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI). ⋯ Injection with BTX-A is an effective day-case treatment that bridges the gap between oral and invasive surgical treatment of drug-resistant NDO in patients with SCI.
