Propofol versus halothane in paediatric daycase surgery: a comparison of the duration of induction and haemodynamic profile.
Inhalational induction with Halothane is commonly used for anaesthesia in children. Its drawbacks include bradycardia and hypotension. Intravenous propofol has recently challenged this position. ⋯ Halothane and propofol had similar changes to cardiovascular parameters during anaesthetic induction. The shorter duration of induction of propofol may be preferable for daycase surgeries.

The conventional inferior alveolar nerve block (IANB) has been used for mandibular anaesthesia for many years. It is associated with a number of complications including failure of anaesthesia. Alternative techniques were therefore developed for the mandibular anaesthesia. ⋯ Formal training in the use of alternative techniques to the IANB in achieving mandibular anaesthesia was a very important factor that determined the practice and knowledge of these techniques. Although the IANB was still the primarychoice for all of our respondents, there are claims by a lot of the respondents that with more formal training the alternatives will used more regularly.

Calcium channel blockers (CCBs) can further depress a failing heart and are not recommended for elderly patients with systolic heart failure (HF). ⋯ It is concluded that irrational prescribing of CCBs for elderly outpatients is common in the four hospitals studied. This calls for appropriate educational intervention that will improve the knowledge of physicians in Benin City in rational prescribing of drugs for the elderly.

In Nigeria, Primary Health Care (PHC) forms the basis for an official health policy aimed at meeting the health care needs of the entire population particularly those in rural areas. Despite the acknowledgement and adoption of the Alma-Ata declaration by most countries, as a strategy for achieving health for all, medical educational systems often remain as ivory towers from the health service system. This traditional system of medical education does not adequately prepare doctors in developing countries for their expected leadership role in meeting the health needs for their communities through primary health care. ⋯ Medical students complete their undergraduate years with a positive attitude towards PHC but recommended that the implementation of the programme needed to be reviewed to meet the objectives for which it was included in the training curriculum.
