Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialInhalation anaesthesia for castration of newborn piglets: experiences with isoflurane and isoflurane/NO.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the inhalation anaesthesia with isoflurane and isoflurane/N2O by mask induction for routine castration of piglets under 14 days of age. ⋯ This study demonstrates that isoflurane or isoflurane/N2O anaesthesia by mask induction proves to be a safe, short and reliable method in piglets undergoing castration. Reaction to the castration procedure were significantly reduced. Stress hormone values were not different between the groups because of a large individual difference.

Clinical Trial Controlled Clinical TrialHepatic effects of halothane, isoflurane or sevoflurane anaesthesia in dogs.
The effects of halothane, isoflurane and sevoflurane anaesthesia on hepatic function and hepatocellular damage were investigated in dogs, comparing the activity of hepatic enzymes and bilirubin concentration in serum. An experimental study was designed. Twenty-one clinically normal mongrel dogs were divided into three groups and accordingly anaesthetized with halothane (n = 7), isoflurane (n = 7) and sevoflurane (n = 7). ⋯ All dogs recovered from anaesthesia without complications and none developed clinical signs of hepatic damage within 14 days. The results suggest that the use of halothane anaesthesia induces an elevation of serum activities of liver enzymes more frequently than isoflurane or sevoflurane from 2 to 14 days after anaesthesia in dogs. The effects of isoflurane or sevoflurane anaesthesia on the liver in dogs is safer than halothane anaesthesia in dogs.

Ultrasound-guided catheterization of the portal vein in 11 cows using the Seldinger technique.
Catheterization of the portal vein using the Seldinger technique [Acta Radiol. (1958) 38, 368] was performed in 11 cows. Ultrasound-guided percutaneous portocentesis, using a 25-cm, 14-gauge steel cannula, was performed from the 10th, 11th or 12th intercostal space on the right side. A stylet was placed through the cannula, which was then removed, and a polyurethane balloon-tipped catheter was advanced over the stylet into the portal vein and sutured to the skin (Seldinger, 1952). ⋯ Generally, the severity of the lesions was mild. The results of this study demonstrated that ultrasound-guided percutaneous catheterization of the portal vein, using the Seldinger technique, is possible in cows. The catheter may be left in place for collection of blood samples for up to 15 days.

Biochemical markers of bone activity in young standardbred horses during different types of exercise and training.
Seven untrained Standardbred horses were used in a training programme of 6 weeks to evaluate the effects of exercise and training on bone metabolism. The horses were exercised on a treadmill according to a standardized exercise test (SET 1: six incremental steps, 5 min duration each; start 5 m/s, increase 1 m/s). SET 1 was followed by a training programme of 6 weeks. ⋯ Osteocalcin and ICTP were not affected by HSE. Baseline osteocalcin levels dropped during the course of training. The acute response of biochemical bone markers indicates a direct influence of a single bout of exercise on bone metabolism.

The effects of intrathoracic pressure during continuous two-lung ventilation for thoracoscopy on the cardiorespiratory parameters in sevoflurane anaesthetized dogs.
The cardiopulmonary effects of different levels of carbon dioxide insufflation (3, 5 and 2 mm Hg) under two-lung ventilation were studied in six sevoflurane (1.5 minimum alveolar concentration; MAC) anaesthetized dogs during left-sided thoracoscopy. An arterial catheter, Swan-Ganz catheter and multianaesthetic gas analyser were used to monitor the cardiopulmonary parameters during the experiment. Baseline data were obtained before intrathoracic pressure elevation and the measurements were repeated at intervals after left lung collapse induced by insufflation with carbon dioxide gas. ⋯ Intrathoracic view was satisfactory with an intrapleural pressure of 2 mm Hg. Therefore, the intrathoracic pressure rise during thoracoscopy with two-lung ventilation should be kept as low as possible. Additional insufflation periods should be avoided, since a more rapid and more severe cardiopulmonary depression can occur.
