Nowadays approximately 20% of all patients operated are older than 60 years of age. So it seems to be interesting to investigate the effect on the increase of systemic disease of these patients, to estimate a proper anaesthesiological management. ⋯ Therefore preoperatively registration and therapy of these risks are necessary, however diagnostic evaluation cannot be standardized. There is no typical anaesthesia for the elderly.

Microcirculatory disturbances are important complications in hypertension, arterial occlusive disease (PAVK) and diabetic angiopathies. The special haemorrheological diagnostics for the judgment of the terminal vascular bed tended to the comprehension of the haemorheological risk. ⋯ In hypertension the application of diuretic drugs should be done more critically and more controlled, in order to avoid conditions of hyperviscosity with their sequels for the microcirculation. The internal therapy in PAVK and diabetic angiopathies must include the amelioration of the disturbed blood fluidity.

[Frank N. Wilson and his significance for cardiology].
100 years ago Frank Norman Wilson (Nov. 19th 1890 to Sept II. nd. 1952) was born. Dr. ⋯ Wilson demonstrated his theory of the negativity of the ventricular cavity, activated at the endocardial, progressing to the epicardial surface with the inscription of the intrinsic deflection as the impulse arrived as the epicardial surface of the heart. He proved the value of the unipolar exploring electrode with the whole body connected to a central terminal as the indifferent electrode.

The development and establishment of intensive care units for adult patients requires a far-reaching subdivision into surgical and conservatively oriented intensive care for qualitative and quantitative reasons. Insufficiently substantiated claims to monopolization of intensive care techniques that are polemically asserted have to be strongly contradicted. The present paper is concerned with approved structural concepts of intensive care developed by Deutsche Krankenhausgesellschaft and various medical societies. They are supplemented by personal experience in the field of internal intensive care.

[Beta receptor blockers. Their role and therapeutic importance].
From clinico-pharmacological view the present paper gives a survey of the important drug group of the beta-receptor blockers. While non-selective blockers effect a global depression of the sympathico-adrenergic activity of the organism, the beta 1-selective blockers are characterized by a dose-dependent preferred affinity to the cardiac and renal beta 1-receptors. ⋯ Main indications for beta-receptor blockers are the arterial hypertension, the coronary heart disease and the tachycardiac disturbances of the cardiac rhythm. Apart from the increase of the life-quality of the patient the prognosis improving effect in clinical long-term studies confirmed for several beta-receptor blockers should be used therapeutically.
