Comparative StudyThe use of ultrasound evaluation in the diagnosis of peritonsillar abscess.
Peritonsillar Abscess (PTA) and Peritonsillar Cellulitis (PTC) are very similar clinical conditions. The differential diagnosis between them is made by needle aspiration, a very painful and invasive method. This study was performed at the Department of Otolaryngology at the Clinical Hospital of São Paulo University Medical School. ⋯ Needle aspiration was used to compare and confirm the diagnosis. The sensitivity was 92.3% and specificity was 62.3%. The authors conclude that ultrasound is a good method to evaluate the differences between PTA and PTC.

Case Reports[Uvular edema. Diagnostic, etiologic and therapeutic management].
Acute oedema of the uvula is relatively rare, and often idiopathic. None the less, possible causes should be excluded, such as allergy, infection, trauma or mechanical. Hereditary angioneurotic oedema should be excluded when there are identical recurrent episodes. ⋯ Treatment consists mainly or antihistamines, steroids, antibiotics, or specific treatment for hereditary angioneurotic oedema. The clinician must always bear in mind the potential seriousness or this condition as a cause of obstruction of the upper airway. In the light of four recent cases, the authors discuss the diagnosis, cause and treatment of this particular condition.

Case ReportsTracheal ring rupture and herniation during percutaneous dilatational tracheostomy identified by fibreoptic bronchoscopy.
We present a case of rupture and herniation of cartilaginous tracheal rings into the lumen of the trachea that was noticed as an incidental finding during bronchoscopy after percutaneous dilatational tracheostomy. While percutaneous methods of tracheostomy formation gain popularity in intensive care settings, the number of reported problems associated with this technique continue to grow. We propose that fibreoptic bronchoscopy used routinely with percutaneous tracheostomy formation will identify a number of complications involving the tracheal skeleton.
