[Assessing weight and other factors associated with the urinary incontinence of elderly women: a cross-sectional study].
Urination diseases--particularly urinary incontinence (UI)--strongly affect individuals' quality of life (QOL). It is important to maintain overall QOL in societies with an increasing number of long-living elderly people, such as in Japan. Thus, this study aims to clarify the risk factors concerning UI in elderly women. ⋯ The self-reported prevalence rate of UI was 29.7% in women aged 65-74 years. In the future, we plan to conduct a follow-up survey to further clarify the risk factors of UI that have been implicated in this cross-sectional study.

To provide support for child-rearing mothers under circumstances in which they are likely to experience loneliness by studying the status of their social network (contact frequency) and social support as well as the relationship of these variables with loneliness. ⋯ To prevent and mitigate the loneliness of mothers engaged in child care, it is important to assess the presence/absence of mother friends and friends; relationships with biological parents, mother friends, and friends; and interpersonal attitudes and awareness of mothers, and then take actions to enhance positive images of maternal roles, provide opportunities for face-to-face contact with mother friends and friends, and obtain social support from biological parents, mother friends, and friends.

Comparative Study[Behavioral and psychological symptoms in elderly people with cognitive impairment. Differences between assessment at home and at an adult day-care facility].
In order for activities preventing cognitive decline in the elderly and burdens of the caregiver to be effective and efficient, it is important to assess cognitive impairment and the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) in community-dwelling elderly people with cognitive impairment. The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in BPSD between assessment at home and assessment at an adult day-care facility, and to assess the relationship, between BPSD and caregiver burden in disabled elderly people with and without mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or dementia. ⋯ The scores of the BPSD and caregiver burden worsened with increasing severity of cognitive impairment, and the BPSD was more apparent when assessed at home compared to at the adult day-care facility. These findings suggest that the assessment of BPSD at home is important in determining MCI or dementia and to estimate caregiver burden in community-dwelling elderly people with basic ADL limitations.

[Perceived stress and cardiovascular disease mortality. The Ohsaki Cohort Study].
Previous studies have indicated that stress can affect the circulatory system. Although prospective studies have examined the association between perceived stress and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality, the results are still controversial. The purpose of the present study was to elucidate the relationship with stratified analyses by alcohol intake category and smoking status. ⋯ The results suggest that the percentage of current smoking and drinking are factors that distinguish between sexes with regard to the effects of perceived stress on the incidence of CVD mortality. Furthermore our present findings indicate that smoking and drinking habit are not the way to relieve one's stress. A review of these should be conducted and we need to enhance support for stress management as well as control over smoking and drinking habits.
