[The value of pharyngo-esophageal manometry in the study of deglutition disorders].
Pharyngoesophageal manometry is an excellent tool for the study of pharyngeal swallowing disorders, and allows quantifying the various anomalies. The comparison of pre- and postoperative results allows better differentiation of the indications for myotomy or myectomy of the cricopharyngeal muscle. On the basis of a series of 10 cases with sufficient distance in time, the operation can be regarded as even more beneficial as the manometric anomalies are confined to the sole upper esophageal sphincter.

[Our current experience with subglottic hemangioma in infants. Apropos of 29 new cases].
The authors report 29 cases of sub-glottic hemangioma in infants. Symptomatology was dominated by laryngeal dyspnea and the diagnosis was made on direct laryngoscopy. ⋯ In the event of failure of steroid therapy (8 infants) naso-tracheal intubation and selective embolization was carried out and gave the best results. In 4 infants failure of the above treatments led to tracheostomy.

Case Reports[Extracranial meningioma. Apropos of 7 cases; pathogenic, diagnostic and therapeutic problems].
Meningioma is a benign tumor developing in the meningeal layers. Extracranial meningiomas, seven cases of which are reviewed, are often revealed by ENT signs. ⋯ A CT scan is the examination of choice for assessing possible extension of these tumors. Treatment often involves the combined efforts of a neurosurgical and an otorhinolaryngologic team.

[Nosocomial sinusitis in an intensive care unit. Role of nasotracheal intubation].
Hospital infectious sinusitis resulting from nasotracheal intubation is common. A prospective study was undertaken between October 1986 and January 1988 of 46 patients who had undergone nasotracheal intubation. ⋯ In 21 cases the existence of a complication (chest infection and/or septicemia) raised the possibility of the role played by sinusitis in their etiology. The prevalence of gram negative bacilli sinusitis in patients with a nasotracheal tube is felt to require the following from the 8th day onwards: a CT scan to detect the existence of sinusitis, sinus puncture for bacteriological identification of the organism.

[Locoregional anesthesia by peri-dural route in neck surgery].
Principal anatomical "targets" and physiological consequences of cervical epidural anesthesia are outlined, technic and aims of the method discussed and 53 patients (class ASA I and II) receiving major cervical surgery, mainly for cancer, reviewed. Effectiveness of cervical epidural anesthesia was rated as excellent for total pharyngo-laryngectomy, with or without flaps, total laryngectomy, lymph node curettage and thyroidectomy, moderate for reconstructive laryngectomy and only fair for transmaxillary buccopharyngectomy. Advantages of the method concern principally the postoperative period: immediate awakening (92% of cases) in the operating room whatever the duration of surgery, avoiding intensive care, and pain relief for at least 48 hours (85% of cases) by maintenance of catheter. Contraindications include hypocoagulability, local or general infection and impossibility of adjusting heart rate, and the method is not applicable for all patients in whom general anesthesia with assisted ventilation is contraindicated.
