Historical Article[The National Academy of Medicine and the birth of cardioangiology in Mexico].
The National Academy of Medicine was founded 125 years ago during the French intervention in Mexico. Under the sponsorship of this brand-new medical association, Mexican cardioangiology began its development in both medical and surgical fields. ⋯ Papers concerning cardiovascular therapeutics were published later in "El Estudio", the journal of the Instituto Médico Nacional, dedicated to research on national flora and fauna as well as their clinical use. These steps permitted the development of a true cardiology specialty in the 1940s, due to the vision of Professor Ignacio Chávez, one of the founders of modern cardiology.

[Conduction disorders after cardiac surgery with extracorporeal circulation].
Two-hundred-fifty-eight patients who had cardiac surgery with extracorporeal circulation were studied to determine the frequency and significance of conduction disturbances. Fifty-eight (34%) developed new postoperative conduction defects. Seventeen patients developed new conduction alterations after coronary artery bypass graft. ⋯ None of the conduction defects were related to the amount of time the patient was exposed to extracorporeal circulation or to postoperative myocardial infarction. All conduction defects were transient except complete heart block in some patients with ventricular septal defect surgery. In this study there were no hemodynamic complications or mortality associated with the conduction disturbances.

Twenty-five cases of double-inlet left ventricle, 23 in atrial situs solitus and 2 with dextroisomerism are described. Twenty had both atrioventricular valves and in 3 a common atrioventricular valve connected to the left ventricle. In rest, the left atrioventricular valve was straddling over the left-sided right ventricle in about 15%. ⋯ In 22 cases angiography determined the type of atrioventricular connection. Double inlet left ventricle is one of the most challenging diagnosis in congenital heart disease. Considering its lack of clinical specificity and according to our results, the electrocardiogram, echocardiogram and angiographic findings are of great help for its identification.

[The post-pericardiotomy syndrome. Incidence of clinical and immunological changes].
We report the clinical and serological studies in patients who underwent pericardiotomy. Seventy three per cent of them developed antisarcolemma antibodies 4 weeks after surgery, and a third of them also had antimitochondrial antibodies. However, clinical post-pericardiotomy syndrome was rare; only 7% of the patients fulfilled the criteria for this diagnosis. Although immune responses against tissue antigens are frequent as a consequence of surgical trauma, the clinical manifestations are rare.

[Ligation of the ductus arteriosus in premature infants. Surgical considerations].
It is described the surgical interruption of Patent Ductus Arteriosus in ten premature newborn patients with cardiac insufficiency and/or respiratory distress syndrome. The authors mention the technical factors that they consider important to have good results with these fragile infants, as the use of local anesthesia; to perform the procedure in the neonatal intensive care unit, the extrapleural dissection of the ductus, etc. The post-operative care problems are analyzed and this experience is compared with reports from other authors.
