Historical Article[Role of epidemiological science and practice in protecting the health of the population of the country].
The historical stages of the development of epidemiology as a science with a specific object of study, is summarized. One of the greatest theoretical generalizations is the doctrine on the natural focality of diseases. New principles of theoretical epidemiology, new theories and concepts are analyzed. ⋯ The specific feature of the present stage of epidemiological situation is the dominating and constantly increasing role of viruses in the etiology of infectious diseases. The effectiveness of vaccinal prophylaxis to control vaccine-preventable infections is substantiated. The role of epidemiological science in revealing the epidemiological regularities of emerging and re-emerging infections is emphasized.

Historical Article[Significance of epidemiological analysis for the development of epidemiology].
The significance of epidemiological analysis for the study of the epidemic process is substantiated. The historical stages of the development of the doctrine on the epidemic process along with the role of epidemiological analysis in social and hygienic monitoring and epidemiological surveillance from the viewpoint of systemic approach are presented. The conclusion has been made on the necessity of the development of the systemic methodology of controlling the epidemic process and the sanitary and epidemiological situation.

Review[Enzyme-substrate mode of action for bacteria survival in water biotic community].
The role of enzyme--substrate interactions for the survival of bacteria in natural biocenoses has been analyzed with the systems "lysozyme-antilysozyme", "histon-antihiston" used as models. The conception of a possible universal mechanism for supporting the circulation of pathogenic and opportunistic microorganisms among eukaryotes, irrespective of their evolutionary status and environment, has been formulated. This mechanism is ensured by the natural resistance of the eukaryotic cells and by persistence factors on the part of the pathogen; as a result, the dynamic system of interactions is formed which facilitates the survival of microorganisms due to their persistence potential. New knowledge thus obtained opens prospects in the study of sanitary and ecological aspects of water biocenoses.

Review[Filovirus haemorrhagic fevers: Ebola fever].
Epidemiological issues, clinical course and laboratory diagnostics of Ebola haemorrhagic fever are reviewed. The structural features of virions and genetic variants of the virus are described along with ecology of Ebola virus. The data on Ebola fever global morbidity are also presented.
