The Impact of a Cognitive Behavioral Pain Management Program on Sleep in Patients with Chronic Pain: Results of a Pilot Study.
To determine the impact of a cognitive behavioral pain management program on sleep in patients with chronic pain. ⋯ Patients attending a cognitive behavioral pain management program have high prevalence of sleep disturbance, and actigraphy technology was well tolerated by the patients. Preliminary analysis of the impact of a cognitive behavioral pain management program on sleep is promising, and warrants further investigation.

The Treatment of Longstanding Complex Regional Pain Syndrome with Oral Steroids.
Evaluate the effectiveness of oral steroids in relieving pain in patients with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) of more than 3 months duration. ⋯ This study provides indications that the efficacy of oral corticosteroids is limited in treating CRPS of more than 3 months duration who did not respond to previous treatment. Randomized controlled studies (with enriched designs), or single subject designs would be required to identify the possible existence of a patient subgroup with a specific disease profile that may benefit from a steroid treatment.

The main goal of our research was to perform an epidemiological study of migraine and tension-type headache (TTH) among high school students in the Republic of Croatia. ⋯ The prevalence of primary headaches in Croatia is similar to that in other countries of the world. TTH is the most common primary headache, occurring later in relation to migraine, and both types are more common in females. Teenagers who suffer from migraines are more likely to smoke in comparison to TTH. Although migraine patients visit the doctor and take medications more frequently than those with TTH, both headaches are being underdiagnosed and undertreated.

Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) exerts protective effects against ischemia and inflammation in the central nervous system. However, its role in neuropathic pain is still unclear. This study was undertaken to explore the distribution and possible mechanism of HO-1 in a mouse model of peripheral nerve injury. ⋯ HO-1 upregulation could elicit potent analgesic effects against neuropathic pain, which might partly be attributed to inhibition of spinal microglia activation. HO-1 signaling pathway may present a novel strategy for the treatment of neuropathic pain.

Motor vehicle crash victims with physical injury are likely to receive prescription opioids and benzodiazepines. Potential mental trauma and lack of primary treating physician contribute to the risk of adverse opioid outcomes for this group. The purpose of this study is to characterise opioid and benzodiazepine prescribing after road traffic injury. ⋯ Prescription opioid and benzodiazepine before road traffic injury was substantial: the significance of postinjury prescription drug use cannot be established without taking preinjury use into account. It may be beneficial for pain medication to be managed by a pain treatment coordinator, in this injured population with high rates of pre-existing opioid and benzodiazepine use.
