The role of cognition is central to the fear avoidance (FA) model of chronic pain (CP), which emphasizes the importance of catastrophic pain interpretations and has been shown to be applicable to pediatric CP populations. However, while we know that pain catastrophizing plays a distinct role in influencing outcomes for children with CP, we know little about the specifics of how young people with CP experience catastrophizing and worry, as well as their general pain beliefs. ⋯ The findings highlight the need for psychological interventions targeting acceptance of uncertainty and also informing education on mind/body connections in adolescents with CP.

Genicular nerve radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is not associated with known clinically significant complications. ⋯ Although genicular nerve RFA is generally considered a safe procedure, cases of septic arthritis, pes anserine tendon injury, third-degree skin burn, and clinically significant hematoma and/or hemarthrosis have been reported. As with any emerging procedure, other yet-to-be-reported complications are possible.

To review studies examining the proportion of people with chronic noncancer pain who report consuming opioids and characteristics associated with their use. ⋯ Our review summarized data from over 3.9 million people with chronic noncancer pain reporting their opioid use. Between 1990 and 2017, one-quarter of people with chronic noncancer pain reported taking opioids, and this proportion did not change over time.

Additive Analgesic Effect of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Together with Mirror Therapy for the Treatment of Phantom Pain.
Current analgesic treatments for phantom pain are not optimal. One well-accepted yet limited nonpharmacological option is mirror therapy, which is thought to counterbalance abnormal plasticity. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is an emerging approach believed to affect the membrane potential and activity threshold of cortical neurons. tDCS analgesic effectiveness, however, is mild and short, rendering it a noneffective stand-alone treatment. This study aimed to assess if a combination of mirror therapy with tDCS results in a superior analgesic effect as compared with mirror therapy alone in patients suffering from phantom pain due to recent amputation. ⋯ Combining tDCS with mirror therapy results in a robust long-lasting analgesic effect. These encouraging findings may contribute to the understanding of the underlying mechanisms of phantom pain.
