State policies can impact opioid prescribing or dispensing. Some state opioid policies have been widely examined in empirical studies, including prescription drug monitoring programs and pain clinic licensure requirements. Other relevant policies might exist that have received limited attention. Our objective was to identify and categorize a wide range of state policies that could affect opioid prescribing/dispensing. ⋯ Policy categories within each dimension of opioid prescribing/dispensing laws could become a foundation for creating variables to support empirical analyses of policy effects, improving operationalization of policies in empirical studies, and helping to disentangle the effects of multiple state laws enacted at similar times to address the opioid crisis. Several of the policy categories we identified have been underexplored in previous empirical studies.

Multidisciplinary pain clinics have an established role in the management of persistent pain, but there is little evidence to support this approach in an older population. This study describes the characteristics and pain outcomes of patients attending a pain clinic designed exclusively for older people. ⋯ PCOP clients achieved significant and meaningful improvements in their pain outcomes that satisfied the national benchmark. Advanced age, cognitive impairment, frailty and multimorbidity should not be regarded as barriers to benefit from a pain clinic specifically designed for older people.

Genicular nerve radiofrequency ablation (GNRFA) is an effective treatment for chronic knee pain related to osteoarthritis. It is often utilized when conservative management has failed and patients wish to avoid arthroplasty, are poor surgical candidates due to comorbid medical conditions, or in those suffering from persistent pain after arthroplasty. The classic targets for GNRFA include the superior lateral genicular nerve, superior medial genicular nerve, and inferior medial genicular nerve but multiple anatomic studies have demonstrated additional sensory innervation to the knee. ⋯ Future clinical research should be performed to confirm the safety and effectiveness of this specific approach.

Predictors of Long-Term Opioid Use Following Hospitalization for Traumatic Injury in a Racially and Ethnically Diverse Population: A 12-month Prospective Observational Study.
Long-term prescription opioid use is a significant risk factor for opioid morbidity and mortality, and severe traumatic injury is an important initiation point for prescription opioid use. This study examines predictors of long-term prescription opioid use among a racially and ethnically diverse population of patients hospitalized for traumatic injury. ⋯ Providers could consider screening for past use of prescription pain relievers and post-traumatic stress disorder before hospital discharge to identify patients who might benefit from additional resources and support. However, providers should ensure that these patients' pain management needs are still being met and avoid abrupt discontinuation of prescription opioid use among those with a history of long-term use.

To evaluate effectiveness and safety of computed tomography (CT)-guided cyst rupture with intraarticular contrast-enhanced injection of steroid and local anesthetic as first choice therapy in patients with facet joint cyst-induced radicular pain. ⋯ CT-guided cyst rupture as the first-choice therapy in patients with cyst-induced radicular pain was safe and effective. Successful cyst rupture was associated with no need for surgery. Cysts at lower lumbar spine revealed the highest success rate.
