Counseling Veterans with Chronic Pain during the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Secondary Analysis of a Randomized Controlled Trial.
Veterans with chronic pain could be vulnerable during the COVID-19 pandemic. We qualitatively explored the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on a sample of veterans receiving brief counseling focused on pain management in an ongoing clinical trial and discuss how the pandemic affected the process of motivating veterans with chronic pain to engage in interdisciplinary multimodal pain treatment at the Department of Veteran Affairs. ⋯ Counselors can leverage feelings of resilience and personal growth to motivate veterans' use of adaptive coping skills and a wider array of pain management services.

This study examined potential risk factors associated with healthcare utilization among patients with spine (i.e., neck and back) pain. ⋯ A number of important demographics and clinical correlates were associated with increased likelihood of seeking new and continued episodes of care for spine pain; however, further examination of risk factors associated with healthcare utilization for spine pain is indicated.

To review evidence from longitudinal studies on the association between prescription opioid use and common mood and anxiety symptoms. ⋯ Mental health should be considered when opioids are prescribed because some patients could be vulnerable to adverse mental health outcomes.

The justification for this review is the need for high-quality evidence to assist in the decision-making process when applying percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (PENS) or transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) in a clinical setting. The main aim was to determine if the use of PENS is more effective and should be recommended when compared to TENS for the reduction of musculoskeletal pain intensity. ⋯ There is low-quality of evidence for more pain intensity reduction with PENS, but the difference was not clinically significant. However, when only studies with low risk of bias are meta-analyzed, there is a moderate quality of evidence that there is no difference when TENS or PENS is applied for pain intensity.

Persistent postsurgical pain (PPSP) is a common complication that impacts quality of life, often necessitating long-term opioid treatment. Certain neurocognitive factors, including reduced performance on cognitive flexibility tasks, are associated with increased risk of PPSP. We examine the perceptions of surgical patients and clinicians with regard to perioperative pain management activities and needs; patient acceptance and use of a perioperative neurocognitive training intervention; and implementation feasibility. ⋯ The study identified several guiding principles for addressing patients' and clinicians' barriers to effectively implementing a neurocognitive training intervention to mitigate PPSP after surgery. To ensure the sustainability of neurocognitive interventions for preventing PPSP, such interventions would need to be adapted to meet patients' and clinicians' needs within the perioperative context.
