[Prophylactic and therapeutic intermittent positive pressure breathing with combined therapeutic aerosols (IPPB/I)--functional and morphological effects. I. Functional effects of prophylactic IPPB/I (author's transl)].
Intermittent positive pressure breathing combined with therapeutic aerosol inhalation (IPPB/I) was applied to improve the preoperative respiratory function and to prevent postoperative pulmonary complications in patients with carcinoma. No significant improvement in ventilation, arterial PO2, and load-carrying could be shown after prophylactical application of IPPB/I for 7 days. A distinct decrease of arterial PO2 was seen immediately after IPPB/I. Further investigations are necessary to improve the method.

Case Reports[The "chest wall factor" in the differential diagnosis of pathologic X-ray findings in thoracic maladies (author's transl)].
Abnormalities as well as pathologic alterations of the thoracic wall (soft tissues and bony thorax) often present themselves radiographically as small coin-lesions or as a circumscribed shadow accompanying the chest wall. Exact inspection and palpation of the thorax, a fluoroscopy with television X-ray intensifier restricted to the interesting thoracic sector and some soft tissue (voltage about 60 kV) partial radiographs are necessary in order to get the correct diagnosis. The knowledge of the exact side of the pathologic alteration allows a thin-sliced multilayer tomography. Nine cases with abnormalities or pathologic changes of the chest wall are demonstrated.

[Postural drainage and breathing gymnastics--conditiones sine qua non-before lung resections for bronchiectasis (author's transl)].
Report on 150 lung resections in 143 patients with bronchiectasis in the period of 1958-1974. The intensive preparation of the patients before surgery is of highest importance for a small risk and rare complications after operation. Postural drainage and breathing gymnastics are able to increase significantly FEV1 and VC and to reduce RV in the preoperative phase. The complication rate amounted to 8%, lethality after surgery to 1.3%.

[Special diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of pulmonary histiocytosis X in twelve cases from 1969 to 1975 (author's transl)].
15 cases of histiocytosis X and 274 cases of histologically confirmed sarcoidosis were diagnosed during the investigation period from 1969 to 1975. Data of 12 adults with primary pulmonary histiocytosis X were evaluated in extenso. The necessary histological verification of diagnosis was only possible by open lung biopsy. ⋯ On the occasion of a second lung biopsy in one case could be seen that after treatment no more histiocytosis-specific substrate was existing. Exacerbation and relapse during and after continuous long-term therapy were not observed. The features of histiocytosis X and sarcoidosis are set side by side in order to show differences and relations.
